Exploring Modern Taiwanese Art: A Unique Exhibition in Tokyo

A Unique Exhibition Highlighting Modern Taiwanese Art in Tokyo

Sleepy Tofu Japan Inc., based in Minato, Tokyo, is proud to sponsor a major exhibition titled "Synchronic Constellation: Cross-boundary Perspectives in Art," which will take place from September 5 to December 13, 2026, at the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art in Koto City. This event not only emphasizes the richness of modern Taiwanese art but also provides a significant platform for sharing Taiwanese culture with audiences in Japan. During the exhibition, visitors can enjoy a special reading area called "Sunday Reading Room with Sleepy Tofu," allowing them a quiet and comfortable space to relax and read.

Exhibition Overview

The main focus of the exhibition is to examine the cultural exchanges between Japan and Taiwan through the lens of art during modern times. It draws inspiration from the film "Sunday Stroller," which portrays the 1930s literary movement in Taiwan, featuring the Fengche Poetry Society. The exhibition is curated by talented filmmaker Huang Ya-li and showcases works from over 15 Taiwanese art museums and personal collections, featuring around 200 artworks and 500 documents. Visitors will also see contemporary pieces from Japanese artists as part of this cross-cultural dialogue.

Featured artists include renowned individuals like Huang Tu-shui, Chen Cheng-po, Li Mei-shu, He De-lai, Lin Yu-shan, Kuo Hsiueh-hu, Hong Jui-lin, Huang Tsao-tsao, Chen Hsiao-yu, and Chuang She-hua. This exhibition is the first of its kind, providing an expansive representsation of modern Taiwanese art in Japan.

The Sunday Reading Room with Sleepy Tofu

In conjunction with the exhibition, the second-floor reading space, "Sunday Reading Room with Sleepy Tofu," will feature a curated selection of books by tai-tai books, emphasizing Taiwanese lifestyle and contemporary topics. This thoughtfully chosen collection helps visitors delve deeper into the themes and context of the art on display. Resting on Sleepy Tofu's mattresses, attendees can take a moment to unwind, flip through the books, and enjoy the exhibited artworks without the pressure of time.
