Distinct Differences in Teenage Values and Culture Across Japan's Prefectures Revealed

Understanding Teenage Values and Culture Across Japan

The recent study conducted by Japan Information Co., Ltd., a comprehensive marketing research firm based in Tokyo, has uncovered fascinating insights into the values and cultural differences among Japanese teenagers aged 13 to 19. This survey, titled "Regional Differences in Teenage Values and Culture Ranking by Prefectures," involved 2,533 male and female participants and took place from July 16 to July 21, 2026.

Love for Locality

One of the most striking findings suggests that local pride is more pronounced in urban areas, while it tends to wane in rural regions. The overall appeal of local attractions was predominantly influenced by scenic beauty and nature, with the highest selection rate being 53.1% for the appealing feature of "beautiful nature and scenery." Aside from natural beauty, the survey revealed that the existence of shopping and entertainment venues significantly correlates with local pride. This underlines the prioritization of comfort and convenience, especially among Generation Z.

For instance, in Aomori Prefecture, the percentage of respondents who expressed strong local affection was notably low at 63.0%, marking over a 35-point difference compared to areas like Hokkaido, where an impressive 98.1% reported feeling very or somewhat affectionate towards their hometown.

Information Gathering Trends

When it comes to daily information-seeking habits, the survey highlighted that media consumption is dominated by platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). Interestingly, despite the geographical distinctions in tool usage for information gathering, both urban and rural teens actively engage with various social media platforms. For instance, YouTube usage was reported at 54.5%, followed closely by Instagram at 51.3%, and X at 46.0%. Conversely, traditional media such as television still holds a significant place, particularly in regions like Miyazaki Prefecture.

The second-highest figure revealed the perception that platforms like Instagram and BeReal are essential for social interactions, hinting that, for today's teenagers, social media has evolved from mere entertainment to becoming a crucial part of their daily lives.

Purchasing Behavior

In terms of purchasing behaviors, teenagers indicated that they prioritize reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations: 39.2% emphasized it as a key factor before making purchases. Interestingly, this percentage was notably lower in regions like Yamaguchi Prefecture and areas of Kyushu and Okinawa, indicating pronounced regional disparities in shopping habits. Teens in Japan show a preference for spending their money on food and beverages (51.4%), followed by entertainment options like concerts and merchandise associated with their favorite celebrities or franchises, as well as anime and character goods.

Moreover, 51.8% of respondents expressed interest in indulgent sweets as a personal treat, while 48.6% showed inclination towards beauty treatments, such as hair removal.

Key Findings and Conclusion

The survey provides a comprehensive look at the complexities of teenage values across Japan. Notably, while there exists a common trend of valuing reviews, significant regional differences emerge when examining how teenagers engage with their localities and their spending habits.
