The North Bund Forum 2026: Strengthening Global Maritime Cooperation

The recent North Bund Forum 2026 held in Shanghai has emerged as a significant event in the maritime sector, attracting approximately 4,000 participants. Hosted in the scenic Bund North area, this forum aimed to bolster consensus on mutually beneficial cooperation in the realm of global maritime transport.

With over 60 engaging sessions, the forum saw the involvement of more than 15,000 attendees, including international counterparts from more than 50 countries and regions, converging in Shanghai, a key international maritime hub. This gathering not only highlighted the importance of maritime transport but also served as a platform for discussing pressing challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

Keynote speakers included Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), who emphasized the need for resilience and collaboration amid technological transformation and energy transitions in the sector. He pointed out the importance of fraternity in navigating the complexities of today's geopolitical landscape, stating that the global maritime community must deepen practical cooperation to address these challenges collectively.

Liu Wei, the Minister of Transport, echoed these sentiments, urging for an active response to current difficulties to ensure a safe and unobstructed international maritime transport system. He praised Shanghai's growing advantages as an international maritime center which is bolstered by coordinated efforts in innovation across economic, financial, commercial, and technological domains. "Shanghai aims for high-quality development and efficiency gains while collaborating with stakeholders to establish world-class port and air hub excellence in the Yangtze River Delta," proclaimed Zhu Zhongming, the Mayor of Shanghai.

The forum also brought into focus the significance of stability across every link in the maritime transport chain. Wan Min, President of China COSCO Shipping Corp., Ltd., remarked on the need for coordinated efforts among all partners to create a modern, efficient, safe, eco-friendly, and intelligent global maritime transport system.

During the forum, notable developments included the unveiling of developmental goals and a roadmap for the Shanghai-Hamburg ecological maritime corridor. Additionally, outlines for a Shanghai-Melbourne ecological maritime corridor were shared aimed at accelerating ecological transformations within maritime transport. Xu Lirong, President of the Chinese Mutual Insurance Association, stated that maritime financing and insurance play increasingly crucial roles, enhancing the stability and resilience of the maritime economy.

One of the sub-forums introduced new indices for container freight routes as part of the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index, aimed at facilitating better reference points and regulatory benchmarks for upstream and downstream enterprises, particularly those engaged in trade between Shanghai and Europe.

In summary, the North Bund Forum 2026 stands as a testament to the collective commitment of global maritime stakeholders towards achieving sustainable and cooperative maritime practices. As the maritime industry faces unprecedented challenges, such collaborations are crucial for ensuring the sector navigates this transformative era effectively, achieving shared goals of safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
