Delaware State University's Innovative Partnership with Risepoint
In a progressive step towards educational access, Delaware State University (DSU) has announced a partnership with Risepoint, an education technology company, to broaden its online degree offerings specifically aimed at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This collaboration is the first of its kind in the burgeoning eHBCU consortium, which strives to provide educational opportunities to students regardless of their geographical location or personal circumstances.
This initiative is inspired by the vision of eHBCU, which aims to give learners access to the pride and unique community that HBCUs represent. The consortium was founded in late 2024 with backing from investors like Blue Meridian and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, alongside notable institutions including Alabama State University and Pensole Lewis College. It recently received additional support from the Lilly Endowment to further its goals of expanding educational access.
DSU’s President, Tony Allen, who also serves as the chairman of eHBCU, emphasized the continuing importance of obtaining a college degree, particularly in the African American community. He referenced a 2021 report by the United Negro College Fund, indicating that attending an HBCU is a key factor for African Americans from under-resourced communities aiming to achieve middle-class status in America. Allen stated, “In a brave new world, we cannot just meet our students on the yard. We need to be everywhere they are and be there with the latest tools.” He highlighted that there are currently five million online learners, many of whom are enrolled at just a handful of campuses.
The partnership between DSU and Risepoint intends to meet the demand for online programs tailored to the contemporary workforce's needs. Risepoint’s CEO, Fernando Bleichmar, expressed pride in collaborating with a mission-driven institution like DSU, emphasizing the potential impact when technology and education combine effectively. He stated, “We’re excited to work alongside eHBCU and DSU to expand access to flexible, high-quality online programs.”
The expansion of these online offerings is expected to roll out in the Fall of 2026, with both organizations committed to ensuring that students have the necessary resources to succeed in today’s competitive global landscape.
Delaware State University has a distinguished history as one of the most diverse and contemporary HBCUs in the country. Established in 1891, it has consistently ranked among the top HBCUs overall according to U.S. News & World Report. The institution is dedicated to providing educational access to over 6,600 students, and its recognition extends to its online education programs, holding an R2 Carnegie Classification for high research activity.
The eHBCU consortium aims to revolutionize the way higher education is delivered to learners across the nation, making the rich academic traditions of HBCUs more accessible than ever before. By harnessing technology, they seek to eliminate geographic barriers and empower students with the flexibility to pursue their goals in education and beyond.
