College Board's National Recognition Program Reaches New Heights in 2026

The College Board has marked an impressive achievement in 2026, announcing that more than 300,000 high-achieving students have received recognition through their National Recognition Program, which has awarded over 350,000 accolades this year alone. This is the highest number since the program's inception.

The National Recognition Program aims to highlight the academic success of students from diverse backgrounds across the United States. A notable trend this year is the increasing participation of students hailing from rural and small-town communities, showcasing the program's expanded reach in recognizing talent beyond traditional urban environments. Amy Reitz, Senior Vice President of BigFuture at College Board, emphasized that for many students, receiving these awards symbolizes not just academic achievement, but also acknowledgment by colleges and scholarship programs that may not be actively recruiting in their communities.

The National Recognition Program provides three main types of awards: the First-Generation Recognition Award, the Rural and Small-Town Recognition Award, and the School Recognition Award. To qualify for these awards, students in the 10th and 11th grades must meet specific criteria which include achieving a cumulative GPA of B+ or higher and scoring 3 or above on two or more Advanced Placement (AP) Exams, or ranking in the top 10% of their state's test-takers among first-generation college students or those from rural areas.

With this record-setting participation, colleges and universities across the nation are eager to engage with these award recipients, as the recognition signifies not only academic prowess but also resilience and hard work in often underserved educational environments.
