A New Artistic Landmark Unveiled in Okutama, Highlighting Local Culture and Cuisine

Unveiling a New Mural in Okutama

On April 20, 2025, a significant new art installation will be unveiled in Okutama, Tokyo. The mural, titled "Sora, Yama, Kawa to, Sakana no E (Okutama and Yamame)," created by the talented artist Koumoriya, real name Koji Ito, celebrates the breathtaking natural beauty of Okutama and its iconic fish, the Yamame trout. This mural aims to enhance community vigor by attracting visitors to this serene locale.

The unveiling ceremony will take place at "Okutama no Daidokoro" (Okutama's Kitchen), a bento and side dish shop located at 199-7 Hikawa, Nishitama-gun, Tokyo, starting at 10:00 AM. The initiative aims not only to celebrate local culture but also to promote Okutama's rich natural heritage.

Artistic Vision

Koumoriya's mural offers a unique perspective, interweaving the vibrant colors and designs of the Yamame, a waterfall-dwelling trout famed in Okutama, against the backdrop of the region’s pristine rivers, lush mountains, and clear skies. This monumental piece spans a significant area: 7,280mm by 3,280mm on the second floor and 2,760mm by 2,510mm on the first, marking it as the first substantial piece of art in the Okutama region. It is envisioned to be a photogenic spot for both local residents and outdoor enthusiasts, including fishermen, hikers, cyclists, and international travelers.

Manager Kazuyoshi Sato expresses his enthusiasm: "I was profoundly moved by Koumoriya's words that art is an extension of daily life. With this mural, we aim to disseminate new cultural messages from the heart of Okutama and enliven my beloved hometown."

Celebrating Local Cuisine

In addition to the unveiling, the “Heavenly Okutama Yamame Bento” will be offered for ¥1,480 (tax included). This specially crafted bento features fresh Yamame trout, locally farmed, artistically prepared to reflect the natural beauty of Okutama. The bento blends traditional ingredients with contemporary flair, creating a visually stunning dining experience. Kazuyoshi Sato emphasizes, "Our goal is for every meal to evoke ten sensations!" This encourages not only hikers and fishermen but all visitors to relish Okutama’s rich culinary culture.

A Community Bonding Experience

The mural and bento are more than artistic expressions; they are a call to action for community connection. On the unveiling day, the first 50 participants will receive an exclusive original keychain motif inspired by the mural. The presence of local dignitary, Mayor Nobukatsu Morioka of Okutama, is expected to add a sense of community support and celebration to this significant event.

Koumoriya’s philosophy is cornerstoned on the belief that art should dwell within our lives. He has engaged in various projects, including paintings, installations, and design collaborations. After completing a master's program in painting at the Tokyo University of the Arts, he established himself as "Koumoriya" in 2002, promoting interactive and functional art in everyday life.

Through the unveiling of this mural and the launch of the Yamame bento, everyone is invited to discover the fresh charm of Okutama and the bounty of its natural environment. Kazuyoshi Sato notes, "Yamame is a source of pride for Okutama. We hope this initiative will bring attention to the incredible gifts of nature we have. Let the mural and bento be vessels for discovering Okutama’s new allure!"
