Celebrating Marine Day: Special Exhibition of LNG-Fueled Car Carrier LAZULITE ACE

On July 20, 2026, a significant event celebrated Marine Day at the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal, organized by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) in collaboration with Japan's Cabinet Office, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and the Nippon Foundation. This occasion featured tours of the LNG car carrier, LAZULITE ACE, alongside interactive booths designed to educate and engage young minds about the maritime industry.

The event aimed to deepen the understanding and interest of children concerning maritime careers, showcasing the crucial safety measures and the role of shipping in global logistics. Approximately 600 attendees, including elementary, junior high, and high school students along with their families, were selected through a lottery system to experience firsthand the operations onboard the impressive 200-meter long, 50-meter high vessel. The participants toured the bridge and crew accommodations while engaging with crew members who passionately discussed the functions of the ship and maritime shipping.

Among the highlights of the experience was observing skilled drivers perform precise vehicle loading operations in the cargo hold. Children expressed their newfound knowledge, stating, “I didn't know cars could be transported by ship. I realized many people work on boats,” and commented on how they understood the connection shipping has to their lives, saying, “Working in marine industries is cool.” This event not only informed the attendees but also served as a moment for MOL's approximately 260 staff and their families to reaffirm the social significance of their work.

In addition to ship tours, various engaging activities occurred within the terminal, including a simulated vessel navigation experience, maritime-themed quizzes, games, and introduction talks by active navigators and engineers. These initiatives aimed to spark an interest in shipping and marine environments among the younger audience. The MOL Ambassador program was also highlighted, showcasing students dedicated to promoting marine conservation and the exciting aspects of maritime professions.

MOL approaches social contribution through its initiative named “BLUE ACTION for ALL,” focusing on sustainable societal development while actively engaging in social contributions beyond its business operations. From the day of the event until mid-October, the “BLUE ACTION for ALL Campaign” encouraged employees of MOL across various locations to participate in community service activities. This initiative reflects their commitment to creating a sustainable society while enhancing their business endeavors.

As a pioneer in the automobile shipping industry, having launched Japan's first car carrier in 1965, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines continues to adapt to an evolving market. LAZULITE ACE represents the 9th ship in its LNG-fueled series, completed in March. The company’s fleet, composed of approximately 100 automobile carriers, assures safe and stable transportation services, aligning with diversifying needs in the industry.

The MOL Ambassador program currently consists of 17 students from elementary to high school, tasked with conveying the importance of marine conservation and the allure of careers in shipping to their peers.

The overarching narrative of “BLUE ACTION MOL” emphasizes the integration of corporate growth with sustainable societal goals—a collective commitment to environmental protection and community engagement depicted in the phrase “for ALL.” This program exemplifies MOL’s dedication to promoting social contributions that create impact across prioritized sectors as they continue their sustainable practices.

The event on Marine Day encapsulated not only the achievements of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines but also its vision for a brighter, more informed future in marine transportation and environmental stewardship.
