The announcement was made by the company's board on October 22, 2026, following an exhaustive global search process. This appointment marks a pivotal moment for CSL as it continues to navigate complex global markets in the biopharmaceutical sector.

Proven Leadership Experience

Deborah Waterhouse boasts a remarkable career spanning over 25 years in the biopharmaceutical industry. Before her new role at CSL, she served as the CEO of ViiV Healthcare, a joint venture primarily held by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), focusing on HIV treatment and care. Under her leadership, ViiV Healthcare reported a revenue of £7.7 billion in the fiscal year 2025, reflecting her capability in driving business success in competitive healthcare markets.

Waterhouse's extensive experience includes leading GSK's U.S. vaccine business and the primary care division. Her previous roles at GSK further underscore her comprehensive understanding of the industry, having served as General Manager for Australia and New Zealand from 2008 to 2012, among other senior positions.

The Vision for CSL

CSL's Chairman, Dr. Brian McNamee, emphasized the need for the new CEO to maintain the company’s momentum while renewing its pipeline and streamlining operations. He remarked, “Deborah has consistently demonstrated the ability to grow complex business areas. Her proven record in developing biopharmaceutical businesses aligns perfectly with our goals at CSL.” Her distinct knowledge of both U.S. and Australian markets, coupled with her expertise in building partnerships and strengthening pipelines, positions her as a key leader for CSL's future.

Waterhouse expressed her excitement about joining CSL, stating, “CSL is one of the great companies in our sector. I have seen firsthand its impact on Australia, with employees saving lives every day through plasma donations and the development of vital medications and vaccines.” She aims to leverage the company’s strong foundation to facilitate continued growth that benefits both patients and shareholders.

Transitioning Leadership

Until Waterhouse officially steps into her role, Gordon Naylor will continue as the Interim CEO, ensuring a seamless transition for the company. Following this transition, Naylor will assume a non-executive position on the CSL board.

CSL Limited, headquartered in Melbourne, is a global leader in biopharmaceuticals, developing and delivering innovative medicines for patients with serious and rare conditions.
