FoundingBase's New Initiative
On July 1, FoundingBase, a company based in Setagaya, Tokyo, announced the launch of an exciting new content series titled “Mayor Interviews.” This initiative aims to gather insights from the mayors of 25 municipalities across Japan, focusing on their aspirations and visions for their respective communities.
FoundingBase’s mission to co-create community development projects engages local leaders to voice their challenges and future plans. By doing so, the series hopes to build a network of stakeholders, including other local leaders, businesses, and residents, who share a commitment to community development.
About the Mayor Interviews
The concept behind “Mayor Interviews” revolves around the belief that community leaders have a singular vision that shapes the future of their towns. The interviews not only document these visions but also explore the narratives behind them. Mayors often face pressing issues, and this platform allows them to articulate their thoughts and ideas beyond formal presentations.
Traditionally, information about successful community development tends to be limited to a select few case studies. However, mayors and community builders are eager to learn about the plans and challenges others are facing as they seek to inspire their own communities. “Mayor Interviews” invites diverse mayors to share perspectives on their current challenges and future aspirations, fostering empathy and practical engagement across municipalities.
Through these conversations, FoundingBase aims to generate a ripple effect, leading to initiatives that encourage community members to get involved in their own towns, thus enhancing the overall network of community builders.
FoundingBase’s Role
As a pioneering organization in urban development and collaboration, FoundingBase operates in 25 municipalities, focusing on city promotion, space management, education, tourism, and the operation of roadside stations. Their expertise stems from being embedded within local communities, allowing them to understand the genuine, often unspoken concerns of mayors and the ideas yet to be fully formed.
During the initial release, two interviews stand out:
1.
Mayor Fumihiko Sato of Takayama Village, Nagano – His interview, titled “Transforming a 'Small Village' into Strength,” focuses on redefining the identity of Takayama Village, a community of around 5,800 residents that has maintained its identity without mergers for over 150 years. Mayor Sato discusses his vision for a rich life unique to their smaller size and highlights the potential of every individual’s voice in shaping the village's future.
2.
Mayor Hideki Toshima of Mihama Town, Fukui – In the interview titled “Community Development is People Development,” he speaks about the innovative “Mihama Synapse Project,” which fosters interaction among people, spaces, and ideas. Mayor Toshima emphasizes that the essence of community development lies in nurturing relationships and leveraging community engagement for vitality.
With plans to update the series with two to three articles each month, FoundingBase aims to ensure that the voices of mayors are shared widely. This approach presents a perfect opportunity to inspire new beginnings within each municipality.
