Celebrating Culture and Tradition: Chongqing Meets Manila During Mid-Autumn Festival

Cultural Exchange at the Heart of Manila

On September 12, 2026, SM Mall of Asia served as the vibrant backdrop for the cultural celebration titled "Chongqing Meets Manila – A Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration". This event attracted approximately 400 distinguished guests, including notable figures from the political, business, cultural, educational, and tourism sectors, alongside overseas Chinese and students. Organized by the Western China International Communication Organization (WCICO) in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines and the Chongqing Municipal People's Government, the festival aimed to enhance the cultural and commercial ties between the two regions.

The festival featured a range of activities over two days, including cultural performances, themed exhibitions, and presentations that highlighted the rich Bayu culture, the significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and Chongqing's culinary delights. This event was a testament to the longstanding connections established through the Maritime Silk Road, which has facilitated not only trade but also profound exchanges in culture and friendship between China and the Philippines for over a thousand years.

Voices from the Festival

Zhou Zhiyong, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines, spoke about the cultural significance of the event by stating, "For a thousand years, the Maritime Silk Road has brought not only trade in goods but also exchanges in culture, art, ideas, and friendship between China and the Philippines. Today, through an event, a conversation, a dish, and a smile, we come to know each other better and grow closer."

Maria Christina G. Aquino, the Assistant Secretary of the Philippine Department of Tourism, highlighted the growing bilateral tourism relationship, noting, "China is now the Philippines' fourth-largest tourist source market, with nearly 320,000 Chinese arrivals as of September 9. I have already tasted some of them in advance, and they were all delicious," referring to the mooncakes offered during the celebration.

Collaborative Future

As the festival progressed, various booths drew in guests with themes centered around intangible heritage, the "Study in Chongqing" initiative, traditional Chinese cuisine, and showcases of new energy vehicles. The responses were overwhelmingly positive, with hearty applause following many performances, reflecting the appreciation from attendees for the rich array of cultural offerings.

During a "China, An Opportunity Chongqing Brands" promotion conference, Zhang Li from the CPC Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Committee emphasized innovative technologies, noting advancements like new energy vehicles and HIFU technology that already benefit Philippine patients. In addition, travel agencies like Happyyou International Travel signed agreements with Philippine tourism entities, enhancing mutual tourism promotion.

Building Bridges

The festival was described as a continuation of the "Flying Across Mountains and Seas" twin-city campaign initiated in May, creating a face-to-face platform for Chongqing and Manila to delve deeper into cooperation in cultural exchanges, tourism, education, and trade. Southwest University, Changan Automobile, and Air China also contributed by presenting opportunities related to study programs, industry partnerships, and direct flight options.

As the sun set on the celebrations, the event not only showcased the culinary and cultural richness of Chongqing but also fostered a spirit of collaboration and understanding between two vibrant cities. This festival encapsulates the essence of cultural diplomacy, paving the way for future engagements aimed at building deeper connections in various fields.

The flourishing relationship between Chongqing and Manila continues to evolve, encouraging more Filipinos to experience "Majestic Landscapes, Dynamic Chongqing" as articulated by all participants of this memorable event.
