Launch of the Nano-Stream Automated Warehouse
On June 16, 2026, the logistics center of Chikuta Mail in Chiba City celebrated the inauguration of the Nano-Stream automated warehouse, developed by ROMS. This state-of-the-art system aims to revolutionize efficiency in warehousing while meeting the growing consumer demand for small parcel delivery services. The event brought together project stakeholders and media representatives, featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony and demonstrations of the Nano-Stream’s capabilities.
Enhancing Warehouse Efficiency
The Nano-Stream, which operates with a height of 4.7 meters, utilizes the warehouse's 5-meter ceiling height to maximize storage efficiency and improve operational productivity. By integrating with order data from e-commerce, the system sends picking instructions that enable cranes and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) to transport containers filled with products directly to workers, enhancing workflow and productivity.
Previously, the Chikuta Mail warehouse housed items on 2-meter tall shelves and relied on manual labor to push carts for picking. With the Nano-Stream, up to 4.7 meters of vertical space can now be utilized, which drastically improves the picking process, potentially increasing efficiency by around four times compared to traditional methods.
Addressing Growing Demands for Small Package Deliveries
In his opening remarks, Chikuta Mail’s CEO, Hidetaka Kawai, highlighted the motivation behind this technology adoption: the significant shift toward e-commerce that has accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic. As more consumers opt for smaller, more frequent delivery items, the need for efficient order picking of small parcels has become critical.
“We noticed that the trend of consumer purchasing is shifting towards smaller, concentrated orders,” Kawai explained. “This increase in small parcel shipping requirements led us to the decision to implement Nano-Stream, which excels in handling small item picking efficiently.”
In addition to its traditional Chikuta mail service, Chikuta Mail offers a specialized delivery service called
