The Moving Legacy of Kuliang: A Story of Friendship and Peace

For over three decades, a poignant tale has echoed through the lives of those connected to Kuliang, a serene hillside resort in China. At the heart of this narrative is 78-year-old Liu Zhonghan, who vividly recalls the 1,800-word article he penned titled "Ah! Kuliang," first published in People's Daily in 1992. This piece not only brought to light the story of Milton Gardner, a physicist who yearned for his childhood home, but it also forged an enduring link between cultures.

Liu recalls beginning his presentation at the inaugural Kuliang Forum with the opening lines of his article, reflecting on the moral obligation he felt to introduce the Gardner family to the Chinese people. His determination was indeed fueled by an emotional connection with Kuliang, stemming from his desire to honor Milton Gardner's last wishes. When Gardner uttered the name of the beloved place in his dying breaths, Liu knew he had to take action.

The story centers around the Gardners, who, like Liu, had traveled significant distances and faced cultural barriers. Milton Gardner arrived in China as a child in 1901, spending nearly a decade in Kuliang. His fond memories stayed with him long after leaving, especially as he expressed a deep longing to return to the place he cherished. Unfortunately, his passing in 1986 left a void that Liu sought to fill by connecting Elizabeth Gardner, Milton's wife, to Kuliang.

During his time in the US, Liu actively sought out information and met Elizabeth through a grassroots organization aimed at fostering friendships between international students and local residents. Despite initial confusion over the name's geographical ties, Liu eventually uncovered its significance through a collection of stamps from Kuliang sent to California between 1911 and 1916.

The emotional richness of this journey resonated with many, including then-local political leaders. Liu, after successfully publishing the Gardners' story, ignited interest in Kuliang and encouraged a journey that would bring closure to the Gardners’ long-lost aspirations.

In August 1992, historical ties were brought back to life as Elizabeth Gardner, accompanied by Liu, finally set foot in Fuzhou—her husband's childhood home complemented by unforgettable encounters with local residents, including Milton’s friends. The kindness and simplicity of the local people made this journey even more invaluable and memorable.

The narrative of Kuliang, underscored by loving friendships and cross-cultural understanding, epitomizes a broader human connection. Liu emphasizes that Milton's nostalgia transcends cultural lines and privileged education, revealing a universal aspect of human nature that cherishes companionship and kinship across boundaries.

As the Kuliang story unfolds, it continues to resonate with readers, including political leaders like Xi Jinping, who were moved by its messages of understanding and compassion. This connection underscores a vital truth: amidst today’s global challenges, the yearning for mutual respect and friendship is even more pressing.

Today, Liu Zhonghan remains passionate about sharing this legacy. With tireless dedication, he aims to breathe life into stories of love and understanding, ensuring that Kuliang is no longer a mysterious entity for peace-loving individuals everywhere.

Reflecting on the journey thus far, Liu articulates a message of unity: "One world, one family." As we navigate through life's challenges, the essence of Kuliang serves as a testament to humanity's desire to connect, cooperate, and move forward together across cultural divides.
