Over 1,000 High School Students Honored for Academic Achievement



The National Education Equity Lab, a nonprofit organization specializing in enhancing access to higher education for students from low-income high schools, recently celebrated a notable achievement: the induction of 1,066 high school students into its National Honor Society. This event reflects a significant milestone in recognizing academic excellence among students who have excelled in college courses offered by prestigious institutions such as Stanford University, Brown University, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Expanding Opportunities for Low-Income Students


The Honor Society’s latest class includes students from 23 states and 57 cities, with honorees proving that talent exists in abundance, though access to opportunities often does not. Leslie Cornfeld, the Founder and CEO of the National Education Equity Lab, emphasized the importance of this recognition by stating, "Each semester, thousands of students from low-income backgrounds demonstrate their ability to excel in college courses from leading universities—proving again that talent is evenly distributed, opportunity is not."

With incredible dedication, these scholars have risen to the top 20% of students enrolled in rigorous courses through the Ed Equity Lab, showcasing their talents in bustling cities like Los Angeles, New York City, and Miami, along with smaller cities like Albuquerque and Flint.

Celebrating this achievement, Melissa Aviles-Ramos, Chancellor of New York City Public Schools, noted that more students are reaching exceptional academic levels, demonstrating that given the right opportunity, students from all backgrounds can surpass expectations. The commitment from school districts, such as Henry County Schools, which more than doubled their number of recognized students from the previous year, indicates the focused determination across various regions to uplift students and provide them with enhanced academic opportunities.

The National Education Equity Lab collaborates with top universities to deliver actual college courses in Title I high schools, allowing students to earn transferable college credits at no cost. DCPS Chancellor Dr. Lewis D.
