BOE and UNESCO Partner for Science Decade Event at the 5th WCBR in Hangzhou

BOE and UNESCO Collaborate for the Science Decade

The 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves (WCBR) kicked off in Hangzhou, China, on September 22, 2025, drawing participation from representatives of over 100 countries and territories. This iconic event marks the first occasion it has taken place in China, and more specifically, in the Asia-Pacific region. The theme of this year's congress emphasizes the universal need to foster biodiversity preservation and sustainable management of natural resources.

A pivotal part of this year's WCBR was orchestrated by BOE Technology Group, a prominent Chinese tech giant recognized for its commitment to sustainable development. As the inaugural Chinese technology company collaborating strategically with the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD), BOE co-organized a side event with UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector to highlight advancements in science and education.

The event, notable for its high-profile speakers including Ms. Lidia Brito, Assistant Director-General at UNESCO, and Mr. Hu Shaofeng, Director of Division of Science Policies and Basic Sciences at UNESCO, showcased BOE's innovative technological contributions in supporting less developed regions, such as those in Africa, to enhance their science and technology capacities.

During the session, discussions revolved around the 'Windows to STEM' initiative, launched in early 2025 by BOE and UNESCO, aimed at improving STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education across Africa. One of the initiative's landmark events was a workshop held in Nairobi, Kenya, where local educators were equipped with the skills needed for programming and utilizing AI in the classroom, using BOE's state-of-the-art smart educational devices.

The workshop's success has galvanized plans for a formal launch at year’s end, demonstrating BOE's ongoing commitment to international educational improvement. They aspire to extend the 'Windows to STEM' initiative throughout Africa, enhancing local capacity in science education and innovation.

Sustainability is woven deeply into BOE's operational strategies. Earlier this year, BOE unveiled 'ONE' (Open Next Earth), its first brand emphasizing sustainability within China’s display industry. This initiative aims to develop a more sustainable ecosystem that delivers long-term value, thereby setting an example for other Chinese technology firms.

In September 2025, BOE released its comprehensive sustainable development strategy, intending to lead Chinese tech firms through the evolving global landscape marked by environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. As they navigate these challenges, BOE is committed to investing in educational outreach, technological innovation, and green development initiatives.

As the WCBR continues over the week, it is no doubt that the collaboration between BOE and UNESCO will spur meaningful dialogue and initiatives that contribute positively to scientific advancement and environmental stewardship. This partnership not only solidifies BOE’s standing in the realm of technology and education but heralds a proactive approach towards building a more sustainable future for generations to come.
