Engaging Students in Social Issue Resolution with AI
In August 2025, NEC collaborated with the Waseda Career Society, a recognized student organization at Waseda University, to present a unique workshop aimed at university students. The focus of this engaging event was to utilize generative AI to tackle various societal challenges. This initiative was part of NEC's Pro Bono initiative, where professional skills of NEC employees were leveraged to assist in addressing issues faced by local governments, NGOs, social entrepreneurs, and educational institutions.
Workshop Overview

Venue: NEC Headquarters
Participants: 22 students from Waseda University and 22 NEC group employees
Content: The workshop aimed to equip students with problem-solving skills and inspire them to develop business ideas rooted in social issues. Ultimately, participants learned innovative thought processes critical for creating impactful solutions.
Role of NEC
NEC played a crucial role in both the planning and execution of the workshop, emphasizing the use of generative AI for social problem-solving. The organization supported the flow of the event, encouraging active learning among students by facilitating discussions, gathering feedback, managing time, and providing assistance in AI utilization.

About NEC's Pro Bono Initiative
NEC began its Pro Bono initiatives in 2010, being the first among domestic companies to do so. By 2020, it established the ‘NEC Pro Bono Club,’ allowing employees to contribute their skills and expertise towards impactful projects in conjunction with local governments, nonprofits, and social entrepreneurs, thereby facilitating educational and operational advancements.
