XPENG's Robotaxi Employee Testing Signals Major Step in Physical AI Revolution
XPENG's Robotaxi: A Step into the Future of Mobility
In an exciting development within the realm of self-driving technology, XPENG has announced the commencement of employee testing for its Robotaxi program. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the company's ongoing evolution from intelligent electric vehicles to fully autonomous vehicles, driven by what they term 'Physical AI.' Just eight months after XPENG unveiled its ambitious Robotaxi initiative during the XPENG AI Day 2025, the company has made rapid strides toward commercial implementation.
A Landmark Journey Begins
To celebrate the launch of the Robotaxi testing phase, XPENG’s Chairman and CEO, He Xiaopeng, took the inaugural ride as an internal passenger. Demonstrating the functionality of the Robotaxi platform, he successfully ordered a ride, was picked up, and reached his designated location through the system, showcasing a seamless integration of the entire service chain—from ride hailing to autonomous dispatching and passenger transport.
During a company-wide meeting dedicated to the Robotaxi project, He Xiaopeng emphasized its strategic importance. He noted, “Robotaxi represents an important step in XPENG's expansion from smart electric vehicles to robotic vehicles. Over the next decade, Physical AI will increasingly evolve into robots. For XPENG, Robotaxi is not simply a new business; it is a crucial milestone in unlocking the real potential of Physical AI.”
The Future of Vehicles: From Smart EVs to Robotic Platforms
As the field of autonomous driving progresses, transitioning from mere driver assistance systems to fully autonomous functionality, XPENG anticipates that vehicles will evolve into intelligent robotic platforms with the capabilities for perception, reasoning, and decision-making. With the engine of this innovation being XPENG's self-developed Turing AI chip and the VLA2.0 AI model, the Robotaxi represents one of XPENG's comprehensive applications of Physical AI, merging advancements in intelligent vehicles, autonomous driving, and embodied AI.
A Strategy for Global Impact
During the same meeting, He Xiaopeng articulated a long-term strategy for the Robotaxi initiative. Rather than managing a fleet of ride-hailing vehicles independently, XPENG plans to position itself primarily as a technology provider and ecosystem enabler. This strategic pivot will allow them to supply the necessary software, hardware, and AI technologies for autonomous mobility, while collaborating with local enterprises to deliver services on the ground.
By utilizing the same technological foundation that supports their Level 2 and Level 4 autonomous driving systems, XPENG's Robotaxi platform is carefully designed for swift deployment across a variety of cities and markets without reliance on costly LIDAR-heavy systems or high-definition mapping. Candice Yuan, the head of XPENG Robotaxi, pointed out that the second-generation VLA model's capacity for generalizing across diverse environments significantly simplifies deployment processes, reducing both costs and complexities.
Goals for 2026 and Beyond
With the initiation of employee testing, XPENG has set ambitious objectives for 2026, including the completion of ongoing trials and the establishment of regular demonstration services. Guangzhou will serve as the model city for these operations, creating a framework that can be replicated in global markets. XPENG is actively seeking potential Robotaxi partnerships across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, indicating a strong commitment to expanding their autonomous vehicle ecosystem internationally.
