Wynton Marsalis' Departure Marks New Era for Jazz at Lincoln Center

A New Beginning for Jazz at Lincoln Center

In a significant announcement, the Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) revealed a major transition in its leadership, as the organization prepares to honor the legacy of Wynton Marsalis after nearly four decades of visionary guidance. The board of directors confirmed that Marsalis will step down from his current position, while continuing to serve as the artistic director through the 2026-2027 season. Following this period, he will take on an advisory role as a founder beginning in July 2027. Marsalis will retain a seat on the JALC board indefinitely after his contract concludes in June 2028.

This leadership change comes at a time when Jazz at Lincoln Center appears strong, boasting a newly invigorated orchestra that has welcomed new musicians while maintaining impressive ticket sales. The organization has continually expanded its educational initiatives through programs like Essentially Ellington and Let Freedom Swing, attracting musicians and audiences from across the nation. Notably, endeavors like Jazz Congress and Blue Engine Records have not only become hubs for musical and artistic collaboration but have also solidified JALC’s position as a key player in the jazz community.

To ensure a smooth transition, a committee has been established to work closely with Marsalis in identifying the next generation of artistic leaders. Additionally, another committee will spearhead the search for a new executive director following the impending departure of Greg Scholl in June 2026. The newly appointed artistic director and executive director will have equal partnership roles, reporting directly to the board.

Reflecting on his time at JALC, Marsalis stated, "When we founded Jazz at Lincoln Center in 1987, our mission was to create a lasting institution that promotes the often-overlooked culture of jazz. It has been a lifetime honor for me, and I take great pride in what we have accomplished together. The work of JALC and our orchestra has been my artistic priority as a musician and citizen. As we approach our 40th anniversary, the time is right for this transition. I am grateful to my fellow artists, the board of directors, and the incredible dedication of the JALC family. Our mission will continue and grow ever more essential. I am excited about the future, confident that the new direction will take us to greater heights alongside emerging musicians and advocates who are talented, skilled, and inspired."

The upcoming Jazz at Lincoln Center season in 2026-2027 will serve as an international tribute to Marsalis' impactful career and enduring influence on jazz music. The complete schedule for the season is set to be unveiled in February 2026.

As Jazz at Lincoln Center embarks on this transformative journey, the future looks promising, with a commitment to honor the legacy of Wynton Marsalis while paving the way for new leadership and innovation in the world of jazz.
