On February 20, 2023, Palline Co. Ltd., responsible for logistics under the Pal System Group, held the "Palline Cup" at a conference room in Shinjuku, Tokyo. This internal event focused on showcasing various innovative ideas aimed at improving workplace conditions from the perspective of personnel engaged in co-op delivery services. The competition emphasized how frontline workers can contribute to better logistical practices through creative solutions and collaborative efforts.
A total of twelve selected examples of operational improvements were recognized during the Palline Cup. The event brought together approximately 3,000 regular and part-time employees from 11 business locations who participated in submitting their improvement projects. These inspiring cases aimed at enhancing efficiency in logistics tasks such as catalog organization and food processing, which are critical to the co-op delivery function.
The evaluation comprised various procedures, including handling over 2 million items daily on the set line and improvements within food processing centers. Ideas were shared among employees to reduce errors and optimize workflows, resulting in twelve innovative submissions for the judges to assess.
Judges included company executives from Palline, as well as key figures from the Pal System Federation, such as Masakazu Tsuji, executive managing director of logistics and agricultural processing departments. Opening the event, President Hiroshi Yokoyama expressed his belief that cultivating a workforce accustomed to ongoing improvement can significantly strengthen the organization, particularly in the fast-paced logistics industry where merely maintaining the status quo is becoming increasingly challenging.
One of the standout stories from the competition was presented by the Iwatsuki Fruits Center, which drew a special award for its impressive enhancement of the inspection and feedback process concerning fruit sorting. Workers had previously relied on manual entries that could lead to mistakes in product returns or waste. Transitioning to a printed label system for tracking defective items reduced both errors and the time spent on these tasks, thus alleviating an unnecessary burden on the staff.
The Kangawa Center achieved notable recognition for introducing cutting-edge collection systems while tackling recurring issues with product spillage during the transportation process. Manual interventions to fix compromised products had become routine, leading to a high incidence of waste. By conducting thorough research into the system's mechanics and engaging employees in crafting solutions, they innovated a customized base plate, which dramatically decreased the need for corrective actions by approximately 70%, thereby also enhancing the overall quality of their products.
A notable mention goes to the Kumagaya Center, which recognized the complexities of sorting dry goods and the challenges of additional box requirements. By employing an AI-supported system for automated label production, they minimized manual labor disruptions, reducing operational time losses and significantly cutting down errors associated with handwritten labels. This self-built operational upgrade reflected an adaptability within the organization, showcasing commitment and initiative among employees.
After announcing the winners, Takashi Iida from the award-winning Fresh Set Center shared, "I believe our ultimate victory resulted from each team member's desire to support the field directly. As we gear up for the next year’s 10th anniversary competition, each of us must continue to brainstorm and contribute to the initiative."
The Pall System Group is committed to fostering a work environment where the perspectives of all workers are valued, promoting inclusivity and collaboration across all levels of the organization. Their continued focus on improvement highlights the importance of nurturing ideas generated directly by those who understand the challenges of logistical operations best.
