Morgan State University Breaks Enrollment Records for the Fifth Year in a Row

Unprecedented Enrollment Growth at Morgan State University

Morgan State University (MSU) has once again demonstrated its rising prominence within the realm of education, setting a new enrollment record for the fifth consecutive year. As reported by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), MSU welcomed 11,559 students for the 2025-26 academic year, solidifying its position as one of the fastest-growing Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States.

President David K. Wilson addressed the university's remarkable growth, describing it as the result of strategic planning and a commitment to enhancing access to quality education. The university has firmly established itself as the third largest HBCU by enrollment, showcasing its increasing appeal across diverse student populations, including significant jumps in graduate, transfer, and Black male students.

Enrollment Highlights

The latest data reflects a 10% increase in the number of Black male students enrolled, an encouraging trend that the university notes as part of its mission to address educational challenges facing these groups. Meanwhile, graduate student enrollment has reached a peak of 2,005 students, and transfer student enrollment has seen a commendable growth to 403, indicating Morgan’s commitment to attracting and nurturing academic talent.

MSU has also benefited from a notable influx of international students, with 1,130 students from various countries enhancing its campus diversity. These trends underscore the university's expanding national footprint, as more than 51% of new students hail from outside of Maryland, covering 32 states across the U.S. This diverse student body enriches the learning environment and fosters a global perspective among students.

Rising Demand in Popular Fields

In terms of academic interest, the School of Nursing, Management and Business Administration, and Psychology emerged as the top declared majors among undergraduate students. Graduate students, on the other hand, showed a strong inclination towards disciplines such as Social Work, Business Administration, and Public Health. This trend illustrates the evolving demands and interests of the student body, aligning well with the needs and aspirations of contemporary society.

Moreover, the James H. Gilliam, Jr. College of Liberal Arts, Graves School of Business and Management, and the School of Community Health and Policy saw the largest influx of new freshmen, signaling significant interest in programs geared towards community advancement and leadership.

Contextual Growth

To put this growth into context, last year the university had 10,739 enrolled students and received 24,414 applications. This year, the university recorded a 9% increase in applications, reaching 26,516. The escalating number of applications reflects Morgan's enhanced national reputation and attractiveness as a destination for higher education.

In summary, Morgan State University’s unprecedented growth over the last five years not only highlights the institution's commitment to providing transformative educational opportunities but also signals a noteworthy shift in the landscape of higher education, particularly for HBCUs. As the university continues to expand and evolve, it stands as a beacon of hope and excellence in the pursuit of knowledge and community development.

The vision that President Wilson articulates is undeniably bold, and the resulting enrollment numbers confirm that Morgan State University is truly carving out its place as a leader in higher education, motivating students to pursue excellence with a transformative approach.

Looking Ahead

As higher education faces challenges such as enrollment stagnation, MSU's continual success presents a remarkable case study of effective strategy and execution. This contribution to the academic landscape not only fulfills a vital community need but also positions Morgan State University favorably on the national stage, paving the way for future scholars and leaders in various disciplines. With an eye toward maintaining this momentum, the university is preparing for further innovations in academic offerings and community engagement in the coming years.
