A New Era for DENSO Manufacturing Michigan
DENSO Manufacturing Michigan, Inc. (DMMI) has made history by celebrating the graduation of its largest class of skilled trades apprentices. This remarkable achievement, coming in the year that marks the company's 40th anniversary in Battle Creek, showcases DENSO's dedication to nurturing talent and advancing manufacturing excellence. A total of 11 apprentices graduated from the program, which underscores the company’s long-standing commitment to skill development.
The Apprenticeship Program Overview
DMMI operates a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program, which has garnered recognition as a Registered Apprenticeship Champion from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) in 2024. This rigorous four-year program combines classroom instruction with hands-on training under the supervision of experienced skilled trades professionals.
As these apprentices transition into their roles as journeymen, they will play crucial functions in various specializations, including tool and die making, machine repair, and electrical work. The program aims to equip them with the necessary skills to contribute to DENSO's promise of innovative manufacturing and product evolution.
Since its inception in 2003, DENSO has graduated 77 apprentices, exemplifying its dedication to systematic talent cultivation.
Commitment to Continuous Learning
At DENSO, skilled trades professionals are viewed as pivotal to the advanced manufacturing landscape. Todd Greer, the vice president of manufacturing at DMMI, emphasized that the success of the graduating class reflects both their commitment and DENSO's significant investment in professional development.
“Continuous skills development is crucial in our field, and these graduates will be instrumental in creating the mobility solutions of the future,” Greer said, highlighting the importance of their roles in advancing safer and more sustainable practices.
Training for the Future
The apprenticeship program emphasizes the development of both technical and soft skills. While apprentices gain technical proficiency in their respective fields, they also cultivate essential skills such as problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork. These skills are increasingly valuable as the manufacturing sector evolves with emerging technologies and complex production systems.
Brian Boylan, director of skilled trades and maintenance at DMMI, pointed out the need for a workforce that continuously seeks growth and improvement. He stated, “Advanced manufacturing necessitates individuals dedicated to ongoing learning, and these graduates exemplify that commitment.”
