Terry Tsai of Lime Shares Insights on Green Mobility at SusHi Tech Tokyo 2025

Lime's Role in Sustainable Urban Mobility at SusHi Tech Tokyo 2025

Lime, a global leader in electric mobility sharing services, has made significant strides in its mission to promote green transportation solutions. The company operates across more than 30 countries on five continents, and their presence was notably felt at the upcoming international conference, SusHi Tech Tokyo 2025. From May 8 to May 10, invested parties gathered in Tokyo for discussions focused on leveraging technology for sustainable urban development.

During the event, Terry Tsai, Japan Country Manager and Asia Pacific leader at Lime, participated in a session titled "Envisioning a Carbon-Free City through Behavioral Change and Technology." The key focus of this discussion revolved around the pivotal role that green mobility—defined as various forms of transportation utilizing eco-friendly energy—plays in the decarbonization of urban environments. Notably, this is tied to larger discussions concerning corporate efforts to visualize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and incentivize behavioral modifications among users through technology.

The discussions highlighted the structural characteristic of Japan, where a staggering 99.9% of businesses are categorized as small and medium enterprises. In light of this, the panel underscored the limitations individual decarbonization initiatives face without sufficient inter-company collaboration. Discussions emphasized that broader networks and partnerships among various organizations are essential to make a meaningful impact in reducing carbon footprints.

In Tsai's address, he emphasized how Lime is uniquely positioned to tackle urban transportation challenges. Noting that a majority of vehicle trips in Tokyo are under six miles (approximately 10 kilometers), he advocated for the importance of promoting green transportation options for short distances. Tsai elaborated on the necessity for structural supports, like dedicated “green lanes” for electric vehicles and electric mobility in Tokyo, akin to those seen in many European cities.

He illustrated the future potential of Tokyo by mentioning that sections of the metro area are already developing bicycle lanes, enhancing the appeal and reliability of eco-friendly transport. This compatibility is instrumental in ensuring that Tokyo can evolve into a more sustainable city through collective learning and adaptive practices.

Event Details

Session Date: May 8, 2025, from 13:00 to 13:45.
Location: Tokyo Stage (Zone C).
Discussion Topic: The future of carbon-free cities through technological behavior changes.
Panelists: Terry Tsai (Lime), Koichi Sakamoto, and Makoto Saza, among others.

This session's discussions are crucial not only for the local development of urban transportation systems but also for Lime’s mission: to create a future where transportation is shared, affordable, and carbon-free. Tsai stressed that transportation contributes approximately 25% of the globe's CO2 emissions, hence urgent re-evaluation of current practices in the sector is non-negotiable to combat climate change and foster sustainable urban living.

By promoting electric mobility, Lime aims to not just serve as a ride-sharing service but also as a significant element in the public transportation system, advocating for decreased reliance on vehicles and thereby significantly lowering CO2 emissions. Tsai's passionate approach reflects Lime's commitment to innovation in the decarbonization efforts in urban landscapes worldwide.
