Phoenix Children's Health System Welcomes New Neuropsychology Chief to Enhance Pediatric Care
Phoenix Children's Health System Welcomes New Neuropsychology Chief
Phoenix Children's, renowned as one of the nation’s fastest-expanding pediatric healthcare systems, has made a significant addition to its leadership team by appointing Dr. Ashley M. Whitaker as the new division chief of neuropsychology. With her expertise and experience, Dr. Whitaker is set to enhance the quality of neuropsychological care provided to children dealing with medical conditions that affect their brain function and development.
Dr. Whitaker comes on board with a successful history in the pediatric neuropsychology field. Her primary responsibilities will focus on growing a specialized team that aims to provide comprehensive assessments for children facing complex medical issues. This new leadership role will further reinforce Phoenix Children's dedication to pioneering advancements in clinical research and education tailored to meet the intricate needs of children and their families.
Daniel J. Ostlie, MD, surgeon-in-chief, stated, “Dr. Whitaker embodies the leadership and vision reflecting our commitment to offering top-tier care for children. Her dedication to clinical excellence, education, and research will not only elevate our standing in pediatric neuropsychology but also ensure that families receive unparalleled care throughout their journey.”
Under her leadership, the neuropsychology division is expected to expand and refine its services, ensuring that patient families can consistently rely on exceptional care across Phoenix Children's broad network. Dr. Whitaker’s efforts will specifically target areas such as the neuropsychology effects arising from pediatric cancer treatments, transplantation therapies, and rare metabolic disorders that directly impact brain and spinal cord function. Moreover, she aims to develop a deeper understanding of how factors such as bilingualism and socioeconomic status can influence cognitive development in children with complex medical histories.
A key aspect of Dr. Whitaker's practice includes the innovation of more targeted neuropsychological testing, which not only improves patient experiences but also reduces wait times and streamlines clinician workflows. In her words, “My philosophy of care centers around assisting patients and their families in understanding brain functions and maximizing their potential.”
Before her role at Phoenix Children's, Dr. Whitaker served as the Director of the HOPE Neuropsychology Service at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and was affiliated with the prestigious Keck School of Medicine at USC. Her training credentials include a pediatric neuropsychology internship at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix and a fellowship at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, marking her as a well-rounded and prepared leader.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Whitaker is a staunch advocate for education and mentoring. She has previously developed a pediatric neuropsychology fellowship program that aligns with the standards set by the Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology. Serving as Clinical Training Director for various training programs, her commitment to nurturing the next generation of pediatric neuropsychologists aligns seamlessly with Phoenix Children's vision.
The health organization is proud to have been part of Dr. Whitaker’s earlier career journey, applauding her return. “Our commitment to training future providers is parallel to the world-class patient care we deliver daily,” Dr. Ostlie commented. “To have clinicians as talented and forward-thinking as her return is an honor for us.”
