NYU Langone Hospitals Achieve 11th Straight Top Safety Rating for Excellence in Patient Care

NYU Langone Hospitals Continue to Lead in Patient Safety Ratings

NYU Langone hospitals have achieved remarkable success in maintaining high standards of patient safety and quality. Recently recognized by the Leapfrog Group, a prominent national non-profit organization that monitors healthcare standards, NYU Langone has secured its 11th consecutive 'A' grade, making them part of an exclusive group of only 1% of hospitals across the United States to hold such an esteemed rating.

The prestigious 'A' ratings include Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion in Manhattan, as well as NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn and NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island. This consistent acknowledgment underscores the unwavering commitment of the NYU Langone healthcare system to provide safe and high-quality care to its patients.

In addition to this accolade, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk notably improved its Leapfrog grade from a 'C' to a 'B' just eight months post-merger with the NYU Langone Health system. This upward trend illustrates the significant progress made in enhancing service quality and efficiency since its affiliation began in 2022. For example, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk has successfully reduced the average length of patient hospital stays by over one day and decreased emergency room wait times by more than 70%, with current averages being less than eight minutes. It has also advanced to an American College of Surgeons verified Level 2 adult trauma center, demonstrating its commitment to exceptional trauma care.

Dr. Alec Kimmelman, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Health, emphasized the importance of these accolades, stating, "NYU Langone's reputation in the communities we serve is built on a foundation of safe, top-quality care, thanks to our teams who put their patients first every day. Leapfrog is one of the best barometers patients can look to in determining where to receive their care, and we are proud of these ratings. This includes NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, where the pace of improvements has been extraordinary, because of the incredible work of our teams there."

Twice yearly, the Leapfrog Group evaluates nearly 3,000 acute-care hospitals in the U.S., assessing them against 30 critical performance measures designed to evaluate patient safety. These measures include preventing medical errors, accidents, infections, and other potential harms to patients. The results are peer-reviewed and made publicly available, reinforcing transparency within the healthcare industry. Alarmingly, only about 32% of hospitals nationwide, and only 23% in New York state, achieved an 'A' grade in their latest survey, highlighting the exceptional achievement by NYU Langone.

NYU Langone Health is distinguished as a fully integrated health system renowned for achieving outstanding patient outcomes. Their continued focus on quality has led to consistently low mortality rates, setting them apart in the healthcare sector. For four consecutive years, Vizient Inc., a leading healthcare performance improvement company, has recognized NYU Langone as the number one comprehensive academic medical center in the United States. Moreover, U.S. News & World Report has recently ranked four of its clinical specialties as number one in the country, further solidifying its status as a leader in healthcare.

Comprehensive medical services are offered by NYU Langone across seven inpatient locations, the Perlmutter Cancer Center, and over 320 outpatient sites located in the greater New York area and Florida. The organization also operates two tuition-free medical schools in Manhattan and on Long Island, coupled with a substantial research and clinical trials program.

With an unwavering commitment to improving patient safety and care quality, NYU Langone hospitals continue to set industry standards and redefine exceptional healthcare, earning the trust of the communities they serve.
