Engaging in Global Peace
On May 31, 2025, the Tokyo-based Pal System cooperative will host an engaging talk event from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM featuring renowned talent Sein Kamei. Set at the Pal System Tokyo head office in Higashi-Shinjuku, the event aims to spark discussions on peace, especially in light of the ongoing humanitarian crises around the globe.
Kamei, originally from New York, has traveled extensively due to his father’s career, gaining insights into diverse cultures and situations. He first became involved in humanitarian work as a child, volunteering in refugee camps alongside his mother. Now a significant figure in Japan, Kamei also contributes to the promotion of activities that support individuals with disabilities through the Japan Organization for the Promotion of Independence for Persons with Disabilities. During this event, he will share his rich experiences related to volunteer work and social advocacy.
In addition to Kamei's presentation, nine NPOs supporting individuals in difficult circumstances from various countries will participate in the event. They include organizations that facilitate 'Peace Contributions' and participate in various cooperative projects that call for action in support of global peace. A World Bazaar will also be featured, offering food items from various nations, highlighting how different cultures can come together for a common cause.
Volunteer Experience Opportunities
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on volunteer work before and after the main event. This involves sorting used stamps and unused postcards which will be collected from participants in advance. The funds raised from these activities will support the World Bazaar’s sales and humanitarian efforts.
According to UN estimates, approximately 340 million people worldwide require humanitarian assistance due to conflict, disasters, and other crises. The complexities of military and economic conflicts continue to pose significant challenges to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In response to such issues, the United Nations declared 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives, recognizing the vital role of cooperatives in combating poverty and hunger and promoting social inclusion.
