Aliplast Launches R3GID: Innovative Recycling Facility for Rigid Plastics in Modena

Aliplast Unveils R3GID: A New Era in Plastic Recycling

Aliplast, a subsidiary of the Herambiente Group, has officially inaugurated its state-of-the-art recycling plant for rigid plastics, named R3GID (Recover Recycle Regenerate Plastic), in Modena, Italy. This facility represents a significant advancement in the recycling sector, designed to meet the surging demand for recycled materials prompted by stringent European regulations, such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the End-of-Life Vehicle Regulation (ELV).

The opening ceremony, attended by key figures including Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy's Minister of Environment and Energy Security, marked R3GID as one of the pioneering plants in Europe equipped to handle the impending increase in the need for recycled plastics, projected to rise significantly in the coming years.

Innovative Technology and Capacity

R3GID is set to process an impressive 30,000 tonnes of high-quality recycled polymers each year. The materials produced here boast properties that compare favorably with those of virgin plastics derived from fossil fuels, achieving a certified purity level exceeding 99%. This advanced facility is designed to recycle rigid plastic waste from both municipal and industrial origins, catering to sectors such as automotive, cosmetics, consumer electronics, and furniture manufacturing — industries that traditionally generate materials not suitable for recycling, often leading to energy recovery or landfill disposal.

Investment and Impact

The Hera Group has made a substantial investment of approximately €48.8 million to bring this facility to fruition, which includes a direct grant of €7.7 million from Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). Minister Pichetto Fratin expressed that R3GID exemplifies how Italy can navigate the challenges presented by new European regulations and turn them into opportunities for industrial growth. He highlighted the plant’s role in fostering local production of secondary raw materials, consequently bolstering the nation’s competitiveness and reducing reliance on foreign markets amidst global geopolitical uncertainties.

Addressing Recycling Capacity Gaps

Currently, Europe possesses a plastic recycling capacity of 13.5 million tonnes, with only 3.5 million tonnes allocated for rigid plastics. There exists a projected shortfall of 5.7 million tonnes by 2040, underscoring the urgent need for facilities like R3GID. Orazio Iacono, CEO of the Hera Group, emphasized that R3GID serves as a pioneering solution to equip Italian manufacturers with high-quality, locally produced materials, while simultaneously minimizing import costs and ensuring supply chain stability.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Expansion

Developed using cutting-edge technology, R3GID collaborates with NEXTCHEM, part of the MAIRE Group, which contributed its proprietary NX Replast™ technology, an innovative solution for plastic upcycling. This partnership enables the production of ultra-pure recycled polymers and compounds intended to replace primary, fossil-based materials in high-value applications. Moreover, the facility's capabilities will facilitate the development of customized materials that meet specific functional, mechanical, aesthetic, and regulatory requirements, thereby broadening the applications of recycled plastics in demanding market segments.

Additionally, with the new Modena plant, combined with the expansion of the existing facility in Borgolavezzaro dedicated to recycling low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and a planned acquisition of a 70% stake in Kronos Polymer Polska, Aliplast is poised to double its recycling capacity. This strategic positioning is expected to elevate the annual production capacity of quality secondary plastic raw materials to over 210,000 tonnes, reaching a total production capacity of 255,000 tonnes.

Conclusion

Aliplast's R3GID facility not only signifies a momentous step for the recycling industry in Italy but also highlights the broader commitment toward sustainable practices and environmental responsibility. By transforming waste into valuable resources, Aliplast is paving the way for a more sustainable future, integral to both local economies and the environment at large.
