KidZania Tokyo's Summer Festival: Learn About Currency Exchange

KidZania Tokyo, located in Koto City, Tokyo, is currently featuring its special event "KidZania Summer 2025," which runs until August 31, marking an exciting opportunity for children to engage in learning about the economy and finance. One of the highlights of this summer program is a unique workshop titled "Learn About Foreign Exchange!" that takes place from August 1 to August 7, in collaboration with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.

In this engaging workshop, children learn about various world currencies, including the relationship between Japanese yen and US dollars, as well as how exchange rates can fluctuate depending on different economic factors. They receive an informative introduction to the concept of yen appreciation and depreciation, discovering that a strong yen benefits imports, while a weaker yen is advantageous for exports.

As part of the workshop, participants engage in an interactive simulation using a roulette game to understand how exchange rates change. During the simulation, the children record their strategies for importing three types of overseas goods at the most favorable times, taking note of how the changing roulette numbers reflect shifting economic circumstances.

Moreover, kids are exposed to external factors, such as international news and economic reports, to see how various components can influence currency rates in real-time. Many of the children shared their thoughts afterward, stating things like, "I never really understood foreign exchange before, but using the roulette made it fun and easy!" and "Knowing that yen depreciation is better for exports while appreciation helps imports was enlightening."

They also mentioned, "I frequently hear terms like 'yen appreciation' and 'depreciation' in the news, but now I can see how it affects me personally, which makes it much clearer." Others expressed that challenging topics like economics and currency felt more accessible and enjoyable, stating their understanding has deepened significantly.

Besides the currency workshop, KidZania Tokyo has other exciting activities lined up for the summer, including a stamp rally called the "Future Action Declaration Stamp Rally," where participants can earn exclusive badges. From August 19 to 25, another limited-time workshop titled "Understanding Shareholder Benefits" will be held, in collaboration with Daiwa Securities Group, and on August 29, children can participate in a workshop called "Challenge Investment with a Fund Manager" in partnership with Asset Management One Co., Ltd.
