WellCare of Kentucky's $190,000 Commitment to Flood Relief
In a decisive effort to aid communities hit by devastating floods in Eastern Kentucky, WellCare of Kentucky, a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, has announced a substantial contribution of $190,000 aimed at immediate and long-term rehabilitation efforts. This donation focuses on restoration projects and financial support for families and individuals affected by the recent natural disaster.
The company directed funds to various local organizations, working to provide crucial support to those recovering from flood damage. This includes a significant allocation to Governor Andy Beshear's Team Kentucky Flood Relief Fund and financial aid to ten additional community-based organizations, including:
- - Appalachian Regional Healthcare Foundation (ARH)
- - Aspire Appalachia
- - Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) – Disaster Relief
- - Roscoe's Daughter, Inc
- - Big Creek Missions
- - Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky
- - Community Agricultural Nutritional Enterprises (CANE) Kitchen
- - East Kentucky Dream Center
- - Appalachian Reach Out
- - Inez Free Will Baptist Church
WellCare's actions came swiftly in response to the flooding that has severely impacted the lives of many in these communities. Corey Ewing, the President and CEO of WellCare Plan, emphasized the prolonged impact such disasters can have. He stated, “Devastating floods have once again made a massive impact on our local communities, and recovery from weather events like this one can take years. WellCare is committed to continue our efforts to help people rebuild their lives.”
To ensure their members receive adequate support, WellCare has taken several proactive measures. Within the first week of the flooding, they reached out to approximately 87,000 Medicaid members in the affected areas. This outreach included text messages and automated phone calls guiding members toward emergency community support, and notifying them about replacing any emergency prescriptions lost during the storm. Additionally, personal calls were made to high-risk members, ensuring their immediate needs were addressed.
WellCare has also set up a 24-hour Crisis and Nurse Advice Hotline, along with access to mental health services, reflecting a comprehensive approach to community support. This includes shipping essential supplies to distribution centers in the region and assisting in logistics to ease distribution efforts for local organizations.
The allocated funds will not only help secure emergency shelters but also provide access to hot meals and necessary medical treatments. Moreover, funding will be directed towards other critical necessities such as generators and dehumidifiers, which are essential in post-disaster recovery scenarios. WellCare plans to support the restoration and renovation of residences, which will enable many families to return to their homes.
As the effects of the flooding continue to emerge, WellCare of Kentucky stands as a vital partner in the ongoing recovery process, ensuring immediate needs are met while also focusing on long-term community rebuilding efforts.
