METLEN Marks Major Milestone with Long-term Gallium Supply Agreement

METLEN Signs Landmark Gallium Supply Agreement

On July 29, 2026, METLEN made headlines by announcing a significant long-term commercial agreement to supply around 25% of its planned annual gallium production from a facility being developed in Greece. This landmark deal is notable as it is the first major commercial gallium supply agreement forged between a European producer and a prominent technology company based in the United States. The deal underscores Europe’s strategic initiatives to bolster the resilience and reliability of its critical raw materials supply chain.

Gallium is recognized as a vital component in various cutting-edge sectors, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy infrastructure, telecommunications, and defense systems. The current concentration of global gallium production highlights the urgency for developing alternative and dependable supply sources, a necessity for sustaining all industrial economies involved.

With this agreement, METLEN positions itself as a trailblazer in Europe by being the first company to establish integrated gallium production and to secure a commercial agreement for gallium sourced from Europe. This achievement not only brings Greece to the forefront of a new industrial value chain but also aligns with the broader ambitions of European countries to enhance their strategic autonomy in critical raw materials.

Evangelos Mytilineos, the Executive Chairman of METLEN, expressed pride in the company's pioneering role. He emphasized, “We are particularly proud that METLEN is pioneering a completely new industrial chapter for both Greece and Europe; the successful development of gallium production carried out by our teams at Aluminium of Greece. This venture reflects both the strategic importance of gallium and global technology leaders’ confidence in the quality and reliability of our material.” Mytilineos noted that this material has already undergone comprehensive qualification testing, ensuring it meets the high standards demanded by leading industries.

METLEN's endeavor to establish gallium production has garnered official recognition from the European Commission, which classified the project as a Strategic Project under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). Additionally, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has acknowledged the strategic significance of this project by approving financing under the REPowerEU framework, further solidifying METLEN’s position as a key player in the sector.
