Rwanda Celebrates the Completion of Smart Education Project and Launch of DigiTruck Initiative

Rwanda Celebrates Digital Education Initiatives

On October 3, 2025, Rwanda celebrated a significant milestone in its educational advancement with the completion of the Smart Education Project and the launch of the new DigiTruck initiative at Kagarama High School in Kigali. In partnership with Huawei and the Rwandan Ministry of Education, these projects mark a commitment to transforming education through technology and enhancing digital skills among the Rwandan population.

The event was much more than a ceremony. It highlighted Rwanda's unwavering determination to provide inclusive, technology-driven education for all its citizens. “These initiatives strengthen international cooperation, promote digital equality, and support sustainable national development,” remarked Joseph Nsengimana, Rwanda’s Minister of Education.

The Smart Education Project has succeeded in connecting 1,500 schools with high-speed internet, establishing state-of-the-art data centers in the country, and laying the groundwork for a dedicated educational network to bolster digital teaching and learning across Rwanda. This project aligns with Rwanda's Vision 2050 and the National Transformation Strategy, aimed at transitioning the country to a competitive knowledge-based economy on a global scale. In the near future, the benefits of this project will continue to expand, further bridging the digital divide and providing the latest technology to both teachers and students.

The completion of this project means that approximately 1.5 million students across Rwanda, from urban Kigali to remote rural areas, now have equal access to high-quality educational resources. “Students in Kigali can now share information with their peers in Rusizi, showcasing the real impact of digital inclusion. It breaks down barriers and offers every child a chance to dream bigger,” emphasized Jin Jiqing, Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Rwanda.

In addition to the Smart Education Project, the newly launched DigiTruck initiative aims to provide free and specialized digital skills training to underserved communities, particularly focusing on out-of-school youth, girls, and farmers. The DigiTruck, equipped with laptops, internet access, and digital learning devices, is a solar-powered mobile classroom that can reach remote areas lacking internet connectivity or power supplies. This ensures that quality education is available regardless of geographical or economic barriers.

Eraste Rurangwa, the Deputy Minister of Information Communication Technology and Innovation, stated, “Initiatives like the DigiTruck represent more than just technology; they are gateways to opportunities and empowerment as Rwanda steps into a future as a knowledge-based economy.”

In alignment with the NST2's goal of providing digital skills training to 1 million citizens, the DigiTruck aims to educate 5,000 Rwandans over a three-year span, cruising through all 30 districts of Rwanda. To date, Huawei’s TECH4ALL DigiTrucks have trained over 17,000 individuals across seven countries in critical digital skills such as using devices and office software, applying for jobs online, launching businesses, coding, and robotics.

The successful launch of these projects is a testament to Rwanda's dedication to harnessing technology to enhance learning and bridge the educational gap in the 21st century. As the nation moves forward, these initiatives will undoubtedly play a vital role in shaping a digitally empowered generation ready to contribute to the global economy.
