Eli Lilly Announces Leadership Change as Patrik Jonsson Retires After 36 Years

Eli Lilly Announces Retirement of Patrik Jonsson and New Leadership

Eli Lilly and Company has made a significant announcement that marks a pivotal moment in its leadership structure. After an impressive 36-year tenure, Patrik Jonsson, who has served as executive vice president and president of Lilly International, is set to retire at the end of 2026. Jonsson joined Lilly in 1990 as a sales representative in Sweden, and his journey through the company has been nothing short of remarkable. He has held various leadership positions across multiple countries, including Sweden, Scandinavia, Italy, and Japan. He also played pivotal roles within the company as the president of Lilly Bio-Medicines and Lilly Immunology, as well as the president of Lilly USA and its cardiometabolic health business.

David A. Ricks, the chair and CEO of Eli Lilly, expressed gratitude for Jonsson's contributions. He stated, "For more than three decades, Patrik has dedicated his career to improving lives by bringing our medicines to people around the world." Ricks praised Jonsson as a patient-focused leader who has mentored countless colleagues throughout his tenure at Lilly.

As Jonsson prepares to step down, Eli Lilly is positioning itself for future growth and change. Effective January 1, 2027, Ilya Yuffa will take over Jonsson's responsibilities while also expanding his role. He will assume the position of executive vice president and president of Lilly Global Markets, concentrating on customer strategies and operations on a global scale. Yuffa has been with Eli Lilly since 1996, starting as a financial analyst, and has held various leadership roles, including president and general manager of Lilly's Italy Hub, which spanned over 25 countries.

The consolidation of Lilly's U.S. and international businesses under Yuffa's leadership is designed to enhance decision-making processes, improve scalability, and create a unified body capable of extending the company's reach globally. Ricks emphasized that now is the right moment for such a consolidation to better impact the company's operations.

Alongside these changes, other key promotions within the company have been announced. Laura Steele, previously group vice president for U.S. Cardiometabolic Health, will be elevated to the role of president of Lilly USA. Elias Khalil, who has served as president and general manager of Lilly's Italy Hub, will move up to group vice president and president of Lilly Europe and Canada. Along with these executives, Nabil Daoud will continue leading Lilly InterContinental, while Karla Alcazar, Huzur Devletsah, and Winselow Tucker will remain presidents of Lilly Japan, Lilly China, and Lilly India, respectively.

Eli Lilly, known for its groundbreaking contributions to medicine, remains focused on turning science into healing to enhance lives worldwide. The company has a long-standing tradition of pioneering discoveries, having advanced treatments for numerous serious health challenges, including diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's disease, immune system disorders, and certain types of cancer. With these leadership changes, Lilly aims to continue its mission of improving human health across the globe.
