Synopsis of 'ZEN'

Set against the backdrop of the pre-World War II era, the story revolves around philosophers Kitaro Nishida and Daisetsu Suzuki who struggle to transcend the Western binary logic separating enemy and ally. As war commences, both characters are thrust into the battlefield, and tragedy looms as one faces execution. After the war, the characters struggle with their identities and morals in a Singapore prison, leading them to profound reflections on life and spirituality. Ultimately, through the teachings of Zen, the opera illuminates the interconnectedness of self and other, unveiling the philosophical essence underpinning 'ZEN.'
