Slater Slater Schulman Secures Historic $800 Million Settlement with New York Archdiocese on Abuse Cases

Landmark Settlement Reached by Slater Slater Schulman LLP

In a pivotal move for child sexual abuse survivors, Slater Slater Schulman LLP has successfully negotiated a monumental settlement of over $800 million with the Archdiocese of New York. This agreement addresses allegations from 1,300 victims of childhood sexual abuse, marking a significant victory for advocates seeking justice for survivors.

The firm, renowned for its dedication to representing individuals impacted by traumatic and catastrophic events, takes pride in its role as advocates for those who have suffered. Founding Partner Adam Slater stated, "For decades, the Archdiocese of New York allowed predator-priests to operate with impunity, placing them in positions of authority over vulnerable children. This settlement represents a measure of accountability that has been long overdue."

Among the survivors represented, 135 have been associated with this case, highlighting the grave reality of the situation. Many have endured lifelong trauma as a result of these abusive experiences. Steven L. Alter, a Partner at the firm, emphasized the courage exemplified by survivors coming forward, often years after remaining silent.

This settlement is not the first for Slater Slater Schulman in relation to clergy abuse. It follows a historical $880 million settlement with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the largest of its kind in U.S. history, and a $320.5 million agreement with the Diocese of Rockville Centre. These milestones reflect the firm’s unwavering commitment to achieving justice for survivors facing monumental institutions.

The complaints levied against the Archdiocese reveal a startling picture of institutional neglect. Accusations have surfaced indicating a failure to remove known abusers from positions accessible to children and a broader culture of silence surrounding allegations.

In a representative case, one victim recalled multiple assaults committed by Father Reardon, which began during his childhood. This abuse, which unfolded in church and school settings from 1958 to 1959, led to severe emotional and psychological distress, compounding the perpetrator’s and institution’s harms.

Under the New York State Child Victims Act, survivors were granted the opportunity to file lawsuits retroactively, breaking down barriers that have long silenced abuse victims. This transformative legislation aims to eliminate the statute of limitations for future cases of childhood sexual abuse, reinforcing the legal pathways to justice for survivors across the state.

While this settlement marks a significant development, Slater Slater Schulman LLP acknowledges that their work isn't complete. The fight for justice continues as the firm pledges to assist all survivors still awaiting acknowledgment and healing.
