Two Companies Selected to Create Role Models for Carbon Footprint Assessment in Processed Foods
In an effort to promote the decarbonization of the food supply chain, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan has announced the selection of two companies to participate in a model project for the calculation of Carbon Footprints (CFP) for processed foods in fiscal year 2027.
From September 1 to September 30, 2023, the MAFF invited applications from companies willing to engage in this initiative. After a thorough evaluation of each applicant's internal structure related to the CFP calculation, their objectives regarding the measurements, the products involved, and their commitment to the project, Morinaga Confectionery Co., Ltd. and Kikkoman Corporation have been chosen as the participating companies.
The Importance of Carbon Footprint Assessment
The CFP refers to the total greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the lifecycle of a product or service. Understanding and mitigating these emissions is critical in combating climate change. The model project aims to facilitate a clearer assessment of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the supply chain and to effectively monitor any reduction measures taken by food businesses. This aligns with the "Green Food System Strategy" launched in May 2021, which emphasizes the need for comprehensive approaches to achieve net-zero emissions in the food sector.
Objectives and Strategies of the Model Project
The project is part of MAFF's overarching goal to enhance initiatives for assessing carbon footprints in the food industry. With the "Common Carbon Footprint Calculation Guide for Processed Foods" published in April 2025, the MAFF aims to support food companies in calculating their CFP. This guidance is crucial for creating advanced case studies demonstrating effective carbon footprint reduction strategies.
Role Models in Action
By cooperating and sharing insights into their CFP calculation processes, Morinaga and Kikkoman will serve as role models for other food businesses aiming to implement similar initiatives. The involvement of these well-known companies not only raises awareness about the importance of carbon footprint assessment but also sets high standards for transparency and accountability in the food industry's sustainability efforts.
Get Involved
For companies wanting to engage in similar projects, the MAFF encourages participation in future CFP model initiatives. There will be various avenues to gain support, learn from leading examples, and contribute to a greener future in food production. Further details about the model project's implementation can be referenced through the official MAFF press release published on September 1, 2023.
This initiative highlights the commitment of the Japanese food industry towards achieving sustainable practices while addressing global concerns about climate change. Through efforts like these, the MAFF envisions a future where food production and environmental stewardship go hand in hand, ensuring a viable planet for generations to come.
