Holiday Cheer: Blue Buffalo's Impact on Shelter Pets in Need

As the festive season approaches, optimism fills the air, especially for our furry friends waiting for loving homes. Blue Buffalo’s Home 4 the Holidays® program is making headlines as it embarks on its 27th year, focusing on providing critical support to shelter pets across the United States. This year, the initiative has significantly ramped up its efforts by donating over 86,000 pounds of high-quality pet food to animal rescue organizations both in San Diego and New York City. This donation not only aims to sustain animals in shelters but also emphasizes the importance of adoption, encouraging families to consider shelter pets as their primary choice when looking to welcome a four-legged family member.

Since its inception in 1999 by the Helen Woodward Animal Center, the Home 4 the Holidays campaign has evolved into a global movement, ultimately aiding over 22 million pets in finding their forever homes. The campaign now unites more than 4,000 animal rescue organizations, ensuring a collective focus on enhancing the adoption rates for homeless pets. Blue Buffalo has been an unwavering partner in this noble mission since 2013. They have helped meet shelters’ urgent needs, especially during holiday seasons when resources are often stretched thin.

Animal shelters nationwide are currently grappling with several challenges, including overcrowding, rising medical costs, and dwindling resources. Blue Buffalo’s contribution arrives at a critical juncture, providing substantial relief for shelters managing increasing demands. For the last nine years, the company has delivered truckloads of nourishing, natural pet food, amounting to over 800,000 pounds of food, helping to ensure that shelters across both coasts can feed the hungry pets awaiting homes. This endeavor culminates in distributing food to approximately 40 local animal welfare organizations, providing much-needed nourishment to pets.

In Gabriel Vinas’s words, the Business Unit Director of Dog Feeding, "Blue Buffalo is committed to creating high-quality, natural food and treats that pets love. We believe every dog and cat deserves to be treated as family, which is demonstrated through our ongoing commitment to supporting shelters through the Home 4 the Holidays initiative." On the other hand, Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Vice President of Development, Renee Resko, acknowledges the profound impact of this collaboration, expressing gratitude for Blue Buffalo’s continuous support and highlighting its significance during the stretched resource periods for shelters.

Jennifer Angelucci, the CEO of Paws Crossed Animal Rescue Inc., also expressed gratitude for Blue Buffalo and the Helen Woodward Animal Center's incredible endeavor, accentuating that this vital food donation not only aids countless shelters but fosters collaborations among rescues. According to her, "The Home 4 the Holidays food donation is one of our favorite times of the year."

To further promote pet adoption, the Helen Woodward Animal Center is offering a generous $25,000 in grants to the most creatively promoted Home 4 the Holidays rescue organization, focusing on enhancing adoption efforts during this festive period when pet adoptions tend to rise.

Completing the cycle of compassion, families interested in participating can adopt, share their experiences online with the hashtag #IChoseToRescue while tagging @hwac and @bluebuffalo, helping spread awareness on the joys of adopting shelter pets. The increase in visibility could greatly influence the number of families deciding to welcome a new pet into their lives this season, a truly rewarding prospect for the wellbeing of animals across the nation.

The Home 4 the Holidays campaign showcases not only the importance of adoption but also the power of community support in ensuring the welfare of pets in shelters. Furthermore, anyone interested in joining the initiative or finding participating local shelters can visit the official campaign page. The Home 4 the Holidays program stands as a testament to compassion shared among communities, reaffirming the belief that every animal deserves a loving home during the holidays and beyond.
