Dickinson College Hosts EDF Panel to Discuss Clean Energy Transition Strategies

Dickinson College Hosts EDF Panel on Clean Energy

On October 29, 2025, Dickinson College will be the venue for an inspiring public discussion titled "Accelerating the Clean Energy Transition to Low-Carbon Solutions," featuring prominent leaders from the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). This event is set to commence at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium and is open to the public at no charge. For those who cannot attend in person, the discussion will be live-streamed and recorded, ensuring wider accessibility for interested viewers.

The panel will include several key figures from EDF: Jon Goldstein, Associate Vice President of Energy Transition; Natasha Vidangos, Associate Vice President in Innovation and Technology Policy; and Morgan Rote, Senior Policy Director overseeing Fuels and Feedstocks. Neil Leary, who directs Dickinson's Center for Sustainability Education, will moderate the conversation, facilitating discussion on the critical steps needed to accelerate our move toward sustainable energy solutions.

This gathering aligns with the recognition of EDF as the recipient of the prestigious Sam Rose '58 and Julie Walters Prize for Global Environmental Activism for 2025, which is awarded annually to individuals or organizations that have made substantial contributions to responsible actions benefiting the planet and its inhabitants. The prize, valued at $100,000, underscores the significant impact of EDF's initiatives, which include driving transformative solutions to some of the most pressing environmental challenges we face today.

With a robust membership of more than 3.5 million supporters, EDF leverages its expertise in science, economics, and law to craft and implement dynamic solutions to the environment's most serious concerns. The organization works on a global scale, addressing issues involving methane pollution, clean electricity, sustainable transportation, conservation of forests, fisheries, oceans, and more.

EDF has established groundbreaking corporate partnerships, notably with Walmart, which has successfully contributed to cutting a billion metric tons of climate pollution, and General Motors, with its commitment to selling exclusively zero-emission vehicles by 2035. Moreover, in 2023, EDF played a pivotal role in securing pledges from 50 oil and gas companies collectively responsible for 40% of global oil sales, committing to reduce methane pollution by 90% by 2030.

In 2024, the organization launched MethaneSAT, a satellite designed to monitor and assess methane emissions, paving the way for improved climate accountability. Additionally, EDF was a key advocate for significant reforms in America's chemical safety laws, culminating in success in both 2016 and the passage of historic climate-related investments in 2022.

The upcoming conversation with EDF is part of a larger residency where EDF staff will interact with classes and the Dickinson community throughout their visit. This event follows a legacy of previous Rose-Walters Prize awardees, which have included notable climate advocates like Katharine Hayhoe, Tara Houska, and Bill McKibben, alongside organizations such as Our Children's Trust and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Join us at Dickinson College for this insightful panel discussion that aims to galvanize public engagement in clean energy initiatives and environmental stewardship. For further details, visit dickinson.edu/EDF.
