Toledo Zoo's Revamped Reptile House Combines History with Modern Marvels

Toledo Zoo's Reimagined Reptile House: A Historic Gem Revamped

The Toledo Zoo is thrilled to announce the reopening of its historic Reptile House on May 22, following an extensive refurbishment. This revitalized space not only preserves its rich history but also enhances the experience for guests of all ages with modern features and immersive activities. The reopening celebration will include various giveaways, live performances, interactive animal demonstrations, and engaging craft activities—all included with regular zoo admission.

A Legacy of Design

Originally built in the 1930s under the Civil Works Administration, the Reptile House is among the Toledo Zoo's most cherished landmarks. Its unique structure was constructed by hand using salvaged materials from local sources, including bricks from abandoned buildings and timber from the nearby Wabash Railroad Roundhouse. This blend of resourcefulness and community history is honored in the recent renovations, merging its legacy with contemporary design elements to captivate the next generation of visitors.

Renovations commenced on January 1, 2025, focusing on safeguarding the integrity of this historic venue while enhancing its functions. Adding modern amenities, better animal habitats, and state-of-the-art guest experiences were at the forefront of the renovation objectives.

Enhanced Experiences Await

The Updated Reptile House features expanded habitats for its inhabitants, improving both space and visibility for guests. One of the standout enhancements is the newly designed habitat for Baru, the Zoo’s resident saltwater crocodile, which now offers a more spacious and thoughtfully crafted environment. This includes upgraded areas for animal care and enrichment activities.

Visitors can expect to discover new reptile species such as crocodile monitors and perenti monitors in addition to the established collection of snakes, turtles, and amphibians already residing at the zoo. This diverse assortment aims to inspire curiosity and educate the public about the importance of wildlife conservation.

The renovation also introduces The Lanterman Family Atrium—an event space providing a unique underwater view of the crocodile habitat. This modern venue can accommodate up to 100 guests and is designed for a variety of gatherings, from weddings to corporate functions and educational programs.

Infrastructure Updates

Critical infrastructure improvements accompany the aesthetic enhancements, ensuring functionality meets comfort. The renovations include the installation of a new roof, updated plumbing and electrical systems, and modern climate control setups to enhance guest experiences throughout the year.

According to Shayla Moriarty, the operating officer and executive vice president at Toledo Zoo, “The Reptile House has long been a cornerstone of the Toledo Zoo experience. This transformation celebrates the history of the space while introducing innovative experiences that bring guests closer to some of the world's most fascinating reptiles.”

This key attraction is not set apart by its historical significance alone; it also emphasizes engagement through the lens of animal education and conservation. With its newly updated design and features, the Reptile House is poised to not only attract visitors but also educate them on the vitality of preserving various reptilian species.
