A Miracle Stage: The Simanof Youth Orchestra Concert in Japan

This August, a remarkable event is set to unfold as the Simanof Youth Orchestra embarks on a concert tour in Japan, with performances scheduled for August 6th in Tokyo and August 10th in Osaka. This tour, organized by the Simanof Orchestra Foundation, a nonprofit based in Houston, Texas, features the incredible talents of young musicians trained under the El Sistema music education program. In collaboration with El Sistema Japan, ensembles from various Japanese regions, including the Soma, Otsuchi, Komagane children's orchestras, and the Tokyo Children’s Ensemble, will also take part in this exhilarating event.

A total of 110 young musicians from eleven countries—namely the United States, Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Argentina, Italy, France, and Japan—will grace the stage. Among them are 64 graduates of the El Sistema Japan program, who will perform in the Tokyo concert, alongside 40 members from the Maizuru Children’s Chorus and the Tokyo Children’s Ensemble joining the Osaka concert. This diverse program not only highlights musical excellence but also emphasizes the shared human connections fostered through music, transcending borders and cultural differences.

The concert will include a world premiere piece by Kakizaki Yukihito, titled Children Dream Straight Ahead, showcasing the promise of the next generation of musicians. Under the baton of Yusuke Kimimori, the orchestra will perform other notable works, such as Márquez’s Danzon No. 2. Audiences can also look forward to special performances featuring Ayako Kanisasa, a unique player of the shō, and pianist Alex Brown.
