About the Whisky Culture Institute
Founded in March 2001 and headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo, the Whisky Culture Institute is dedicated to promoting whiskey culture under the leadership of whiskey critic Mamoru Tsuchiya. The organization has been actively researching and disseminating information on both domestic and international whiskey and alcohol cultures since its inception. They have undertaken numerous initiatives aimed at fostering whiskey enthusiasts and conducting professional training.
The institute also publishes the only whiskey-specialized magazine in Japan, Whisky Galore, and organizes events like the Whiskey Festival and qualification examinations such as the Whiskey Connoisseur Certification exam. Moreover, since 2019, they have operated Japan's only international spirits competition, the Tokyo Whiskey & Spirits Competition (TWSC).
Profile of Mamoru Tsuchiya
Born in 1954 in Sado, Niigata, Mamoru Tsuchiya graduated from Gakushuin University with a degree in literature. He worked as a weekly magazine journalist before moving to the UK in 1987, where his fascination with Scotch whiskey began. Upon returning to Japan, Tsuchiya became a respected whiskey critic, and in 1998 he was recognized as one of the World's Five Leading Whiskey Writers by Highland Distillers.
Tsuchiya has publicly contributed to several books and holds qualifications in whiskey and spirits evaluation. Recently he served as a whisky consultant for the acclaimed NHK morning drama Massan, overseeing whiskey research throughout its production. His extensive bibliography includes titles focused on single malt and blended whiskey, as well as high-end whiskey's value for modern business.
In addition to his editorial role at Whisky Galore, he also serves as chairman of the planning committee for both TWSC and Japanese Whiskey Day, as well as the executive director of the newly established Japan Whiskey Cultural Promotion Association (JWPC) formed in July 2024.
