This year's expo and awards highlighted innovative companies transforming the tech sector and acknowledged their contributions to global challenges.

The Global Startup EXPO 2026: A Hub of Innovation

Taking place in Osaka from October 5 to 7, the Global Startup EXPO 2026 brought together over 10,000 attendees, including venture capitalists, corporate leaders, and aspiring startups from around the world. With more than 50 conference sessions, the event acted as a platform for vital business matchmaking, cultivating opportunities for strategic investments and partnerships between international investors and Japanese companies.

Notably, the expo featured influential speakers such as Ben Horowitz, co-founder of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, and Andy Rubin, co-founder of Android. Their participation underscored the rising global interest and confidence in Japan’s dynamic and evolving tech ecosystem.

Following the successful gathering, METI has announced plans to hold the Global Startup EXPO annually, which is expected to further foster international collaborative efforts within the startup community.

Nippon Startup Awards 2026: Recognizing Excellence

Amidst the expo, the Nippon Startup Awards 2026 took center stage, honoring ten standout startups for their innovative approaches and impactful contributions to both local and global markets. Among the celebrated companies, two stood out for their groundbreaking technologies:

  • - Mujin was awarded the Prime Minister's Award for being the first to commercialize advanced motion-planning technology, known as MujinMI. This significant achievement automates complex logistics and manufacturing tasks, addressing global labor shortages effectively.

  • - Regional Fish received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award for their pioneering work in genome editing for aquaculture. By drastically reducing the breeding cycles from nearly 30 years to just two or three years, Regional Fish is leading the charge toward sustainable food solutions and revitalizing local fisheries.

These awards exemplify Japan's potential to not only innovate but also to implement practical solutions that meet the needs of society and industry.
