Life Time Foundation's Commitment to a Healthy Planet Beyond Earth Month

Growing Together: Life Time Foundation's Enduring Commitment to a Healthy Planet

Earth Month brings awareness but for the Life Time Foundation, commitment to environmental sustainability and community support echoes all year round. Since late 2023, the Foundation has invested more than $3 million into various initiatives aimed at nurturing communities, restoring ecosystems, and safeguarding access to nature.

During Earth Month, activities spanned across nine states, including tree planting events and the establishment of school Food Forests, showcasing the impact of grassroots efforts on local environments. The Foundation emphasizes that their work reflects ongoing initiatives rather than a singular moment in time. This is about creating sustainable partnerships, engaging actively with communities, and fostering a connection to nature that extends well beyond any designated month.

The Impact of Community Engagement

Sarah Emola, senior director of the Life Time Foundation, stated, “These events provide a moment for us to gather, dig our hands into the soil, and invest in the health of our communities.” By attending events like tree plantings, participants are given the chance to forge a deeper understanding of how personal involvement can lead to improved local ecosystems.

This year, Life Time team members in 15 markets engaged in a host of activities aimed at environmental restoration. Partnering with local environmental organizations, they took part in initiatives that contribute to cleaner air, improved habitats, and enhanced green spaces. Every tree planted not only represents a step towards sustainability but also acts as a symbol of community resilience and commitment.

Supporting Accessibility to Nature

As part of efforts to support outdoor engagement, the Life Time Foundation has pledged up to $150,000 to the Trust for Public Land's Happiest Outside campaign. This initiative aims to create accessible green spaces for everyone, ranging from transforming schoolyards into lush environments to constructing trails connecting urban areas with natural landscapes. The goal is to ensure every community member can experience the benefits of nature.

Educational Initiatives in Schools

The Foundation's partnership with The Education Fund has resulted in the creation and expansion of School Food Forests in Miami-Dade County. This initiative reached over 26,000 students in public schools, enabling them to learn about nutrition and environmental health firsthand. Volunteers recently celebrated Arbor Day by joining students in planting trees and harvesting fresh produce, illustrating the interconnectedness of human and environmental health.

Contributing to Recovery Efforts

The foundation's commitment also extends to community recovery initiatives, such as the tornado recovery project in Missouri. A $10,000 grant to Forest ReLeaf supports long-term recovery and reforestation efforts, showcasing the Foundation's active role in helping communities rebound from natural disasters. Members contributed not just financially but through volunteering, providing essential manpower for nursery activities linked to seedling preparation for planting events.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

The impact of the Life Time Foundation is further solidified through various grants aimed at conservation efforts. For example, a $45,000 grant in 2025 to Great River Greening facilitated a student-led tree planting event in St. Paul, MN, aiming to foster environmental stewardship among youth. Also, an ongoing three-year grant to American Forests has resulted in the planting of 10,000 trees bolstering critical conservation efforts for species like the whitebark pine, which is vital to high-mountain ecosystems.

Throughout its journey, the Life Time Foundation remains driven by the belief that a healthy planet is crucial for healthy communities. They understand that safeguarding the environment is not just beneficial but necessary for ensuring future generations inherit a thriving world. While Earth Month serves as a time for reflection, the Foundation’s dedication to sustainability and proactive engagement is a year-round endeavor.
