Sanya Secures Formula E Return as the 2027 Asian Season Kickoff Event

After an exhilarating beachfront race, Sanya, located in southern China, has confirmed its role as the host city for Round 7 of the groundbreaking 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Set to occur on April 17, 2027, this event highlights Sanya as the opener for the Asian segment of the season and marks the inaugural GEN4-era Formula E race on Chinese soil. This year's championship will feature a record 21 races spread across 13 major cities worldwide, bringing the excitement of next-generation electric racing to Sanya’s unique coastal street circuit.

A New Era for Formula E

According to Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E, Sanya is a circuit that challenges drivers to reach their limits, making it an intentional choice to host the GEN4 race early in the season. The upcoming race in 2027 follows a successful return to Sanya in 2026, receiving worldwide coverage through live broadcasts in 195 countries. This timing aligns with the six-month milestone of fully operational independent customs under the Hainan Free Trade Port.

Sanya's emerging role as a prime global events hub is supported by strong statistical data and well-established infrastructure. During the first six months of the Hainan FTP customs system, the island welcomed 1.654 million cross-border travelers, reflecting a remarkable 31.2% increase year-over-year. This coastal city has previously hosted key events, including the 6th Asian Beach Games and the Hainan Island International Film Festival, with plans already in motion for the HYROX World Fitness Championship finale.

Structural Advantages Supporting Event Hosting

Sanya's strategy to attract and facilitate international events is supported by three substantial advantages:

1. Visa-Free Access: Hainan’s visa-free policy for 86 countries and open-skies aviation regulations have established 36 direct international routes to 28 destinations worldwide, simplifying travel for international attendees.

2. Global Outreach: The city is equipped with 23 Overseas Tourism Promotion Liaison offices across more than ten nations, which not only gather global event insights but also foster direct collaborations with event rights holders and organizers, enhancing Sanya's global event presence.

3. Streamlined Approvals: Sanya offers a comprehensive one-stop approval process for both cultural and sports events, greatly reducing the bureaucratic challenges often faced by domestic and international event organizers. This system is fortified by professional management and guarantee mechanisms to ensure successful events.

Thanks to these advantages and a burgeoning cross-border tourism landscape, Sanya is transforming from an occasional event venue to a city being actively pursued by international event organizers. A representative from the Sanya Municipal People's Government stated, “We are establishing a robust platform to consistently host world-class events and warmly invite global organizers and visitors to discover the unique charm of our city, which is not only livable and visitable but also business-friendly.”

As Sanya gears up for this prestigious event, the anticipation within the city and among motorsport enthusiasts continues to build, showcasing Sanya not just as a beautiful coastal destination but as a key player on the international sports stage. The future looks bright for Sanya and its role in shaping remarkable global events.
