Celebrating ONT Day: A Decade of Local Triumph at Ontario International Airport
Ontario International Airport Celebrates ONT Day
Ontario International Airport (ONT) stands as a shining example of local governance and regional collaboration. Recognized by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, November 1 has been officially designated as ONT Day. This significant date honors not only the return of the airport to local control but also the impressive accomplishments the airport has achieved over the last decade.
In 2016, ONT returned to local governance, a milestone cherished by the residents of Ontario and surrounding areas. The airport has experienced remarkable growth since that pivotal day, evolving into a major hub for both domestic and international air travel. On the announcement of ONT Day, prominent lawmakers expressed their gratitude towards the tireless efforts of city officials, county representatives, and community leaders who worked diligently to reclaim control of their valuable transportation asset.
Dr. Ronald O. Loveridge, President of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA), emphasized the transformative impact of local control, stating, "That day changed the trajectory of Ontario International Airport and, in many ways, the Inland Empire itself." His comments reflect a shared sentiment among those involved in the airport's revitalization. Under local control, ONT has established itself as one of Southern California's standout success stories.
The airport's growth is not merely about increased passenger traffic—though it is a notable aspect. From approximately 4.2 million passengers in 2016, ONT currently accommodates over 7 million travelers annually. This influx underscores the airport's enhanced role as a vital economic engine, having catalyzed a 78% increase in economic output and a 72% rise in job creation linked to airport activities.
Atif Elkadi, CEO of the OIAA, shared the pride felt by the airport community. "Local control gave this region the opportunity to shape its own future," he noted. Elkadi further acknowledged the collaborative spirit that brought ONT to its current success while recognizing the airport staff, partners, and community members who contributed to its growth. He expressed hopes that the celebration would also pave the way for future enhancements, including improved travel options and an exceptional overall airport experience.
Additionally, ONT will host its State of the Airport Gala on November 6 to commemorate this significant anniversary, inviting community members to share in its success.
Ontario International Airport: A Growing Hub
Regarded as the second most popular mid-sized airport by J.D. Power, Ontario International Airport serves a diverse population with flights to over two dozen major destinations across the United States, Mexico, Central America, and Taiwan. The airport's strategic position within the region has bolstered its status as a crucial hub for logistics and passenger travel alike.
The establishment of ONT Day signifies more than a mere celebration. It lays the groundwork for a future where community engagement and local governance continue to thrive, ensuring that Ontario International Airport remains a central contributor to the economic and social fabric of Southern California. As the region looks forward to more advancements, ONT Day serves as a reminder of the power of local determination and collaboration in achieving shared goals, paving the way for a bright future ahead.
