LeanDNA Survey Highlights Widespread Communication Gaps Affecting Business Growth Strategies

Unpacking the Communication Disconnect in Business Operations

As companies strive for success in an increasingly competitive market, the importance of seamless communication between leadership and operational sectors cannot be overstated. A recent survey conducted by LeanDNA has underscored this issue, revealing significant gaps in understanding between C-level executives and supply chain leaders regarding their roles in driving business growth.

Key Findings of the LeanDNA Survey

The study, involving 100 C-level executives and 100 supply chain leaders from various U.S. firms, highlights a stark disconnect. Although a majority in both groups recognize the pivotal role of the supply chain as a growth driver, there is a notable disparity in perception. Around 85% of supply chain leaders consider their work essential for growth, contrasted with only 70% of executives who share this view, a 15-point gap that suggests a misalignment in how these leaders prioritize supply chain investment.

Furthermore, despite this communication breakdown, nearly half (46%) of executives anticipate that supply chain operations will gain greater visibility within the C-suite over the next year, with significant increases planned in staffing (41%) and investments (38%). This seems to indicate a recognition of the supply chain's potential, despite the lingering disconnect.

Areas of Agreement and Disagreement

Both groups identified similar benefits from digital supply chain synchronization: enhanced supplier reliability (54% of C-level vs. 53% of supply chain leaders), increased growth and revenue (51% vs. 53%), and improved on-time delivery (48% vs. 49%). Yet, they diverged significantly on risk priorities. Executives expressed greater concern over production disruptions and market response times, while supply chain leaders identified higher inventory costs and reputational damage as their top worries.

An alarming statistic from the survey indicates that 99% of executives and 100% of supply chain leaders acknowledge a difficulty in articulating the value of supply chain operations to their organizations. This breakdown in communication is compounded by findings that suggest 55% of executives and 61% of supply chain leaders believe the responsibility to improve these communications lies predominantly with supply chain professionals.

Competing Priorities: A Source of Friction

Diving deeper into priorities, supply chain leaders voiced concerns about balancing sustainability targets, managing compliance and regulatory changes, and minimizing costs without sacrificing delivery efficiency. Conversely, C-level executives were more focused on managing risks tied to material shortages and operational efficiency in relation to sustainability.

Andy Ellenthal, CEO of LeanDNA, emphasizes that this disconnect between supply chain leadership and C-suite executives could hinder organizational success. He noted, "Despite the critical reliance on smooth supply chain operations for business continuity, a glaring communication issue persists, disconnecting these essential concepts. Many executives still remain skeptical of the link between supply chain performance and business growth, which likely affects investment decisions."

Conclusions and Next Steps

The survey results point to a crucial opportunity for businesses: bridging the communication gap between C-suite and supply chain leaders. This gap hampers the potential for utilizing supply chain operations as a primary lever for business growth. Moving forward, organizations should prioritize initiatives that enhance internal visibility and foster open dialogue. Doing so can transform the supply chain into a robust driver of growth and efficiency.

In terms of next steps, companies may need to adopt frameworks or platforms—such as LeanDNA’s tools—designed to facilitate better interactions and information sharing across departments, ensuring that both supply chain leaders and executives are aligned in their strategic objectives.
