The Bold New Stage Play 'Shinsengumi IN 1944' by PSYCHOSIS Unveils Intriguing Visuals

A groundbreaking new adaptation, "Shinsengumi IN 1944", is set to take the stage from July 24 to July 29, 2026, at Zamza Asagaya in Suginami, Tokyo. This unique play, a historical drama by playwright Hide Takatori and performed by the alternative theater group PSYCHOSIS, dares to blend historical intrigue with whimsical modernity.

In this surprising twist, the famed Shinsengumi warriors of the late Edo period find themselves lost in the turmoil of Nazi Germany during World War II. This audacious narrative allows for a collision of eras and ideologies, presenting an exhilarating spectacle for theatergoers. Originally premiered in 1999, "Shinsengumi IN 1944" has captivated audiences with its comic elements and a poignant focus on the oppressed throughout history.

The play features iconic figures from the Shinsengumi, alongside historical characters from the Nazi regime, a youth choir, and a character inspired by the legendary Kurama Tengu. The fast-paced narrative navigates through diverse historical landscapes, challenging the audience's perception of both the past and the present.

Central to the story is Toshizo Hijikata, portrayed by Daiki Shin, who serves as the protagonist battling against Nazi forces. The heroine, Ai Rain, played by Yumi Terada, possesses the ability to manipulate time, while Kaoru Kunisaki, also a member of PSYCHOSIS, seamlessly transitions between the roles of Soji Okita and a gypsy woman, Karin. The cast also features Risa Haraguchi as Hans, a Jewish boy choir member facing the harsh realities of war.

Adding a musical flair to the production are Hironori Nagashima and his band Dowser, contributing a unique soundscape that combines vintage synthesizers with contemporary acoustics, enriching the theatrical experience. The promotional artwork, crafted by manga artist Benkyou Tamaki, vividly captures the colorful and pop-centric aesthetic PSYCHOSIS aims for in this production.

Director Rika Morinaga remarked, "After a year filled with darker themes, we are excited to embrace a more casual and vibrant approach in this play. We want to depict the Shinsengumi, dressed in casual uniforms, balancing the moments of fight and humor against the backdrop of the fearsome Nazi regime with both thrill and brutality." PSYCHOSIS is known for their innovative interpretations and resurrections of Takatori's works.

Synopsis
