HNTB's New Role with Amtrak: Enhancing Bridge Infrastructure in the Northeast Corridor

HNTB Enhances Bridge Infrastructure for Amtrak

In a significant move to bolster America's rail infrastructure, HNTB has been selected by Amtrak to undertake architectural and engineering services for replacing two vital bridges along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) in Maryland—the Bush River Bridge and the Gunpowder River Bridge. This decision comes as part of Amtrak's ongoing initiative to upgrade its infrastructure across one of the nation's busiest passenger rail corridors.

The Bush River and Gunpowder River bridge projects are designed to improve the reliability, capacity, and long-term performance of the rail services on this critical 20-mile segment of the NEC. These enhancements will support not just intercity travel but also commuter and freight services, effectively contributing to the advancement of higher-speed rail service.

Enhancements and Future Outlook

The new structure of the bridges is expected to significantly improve system resilience while also minimizing long-term maintenance requirements. "These projects represent a crucial opportunity to continue our longstanding partnership with Amtrak on infrastructure that is essential to the Northeast Corridor," stated Christian Brown, PE, the project manager at HNTB.

The collaboration aims to develop innovative solutions that align with the operational goals of Amtrak while ensuring reliable service throughout these projects' lifespans. Both bridges currently handle a high volume of daily railroad traffic, making them crucial for maintaining seamless operations in the corridor.

Greg May, PE, LEED AP, who leads HNTB's rail and transit initiatives in the Eastern U.S., emphasized the foundation of experience HNTB brings to the table, noting, "HNTB's previous and ongoing work with Amtrak on complex bridge programs across the Northeast Corridor equips us well as we move into the design phase for these replaceable structures. Together, we’re focused on delivering practical solutions that will satisfy operational needs, facilitate constructability, and add lasting value."

A Legacy of Partnership

HNTB’s extensive history with Amtrak spans more than thirty years, including major bridge projects across the Northeast Corridor such as the ongoing Susquehanna River Rail Bridge replacement in Maryland and the Portal North Bridge project in New Jersey. This long-standing relationship exemplifies HNTB’s commitment to supporting robust rail infrastructure across the region.

As part of an initiative aimed at modernizing an aging infrastructure network, these bridge replacements align with Amtrak's broader goal of enhancing overall service performance and facilitating future growth.
