The Penguin Grand Theatre Exhibition: A Celebration of Art and Characters

From August 27 to September 2, 2023, art enthusiasts and fans of beloved characters are in for a treat at Nishinomiya Hankyu, where Chiharu Sakazaki's exciting print exhibition, "The Penguin Grand Theatre," will be held.

Organized by Art Space Inc., led by president Toshirou Fukuoka, this exhibition marks Sakazaki's second showcase at Nishinomiya Hankyu, following the success of his previous exhibit.

Sakazaki, acclaimed illustrator and picture book author, is renowned for creating charming and enduring characters that have captured the hearts of many. Some of his most famous works include the Suica Penguin from East Japan Railway Company and Chi-ba-kun, the Chiba Prefecture mascot. His impressive portfolio also features designs for notable figures such as Daihatsu's Kakukaku Shikajika, Yamato Holding's Kuroneko and Shironko, and Toho's Chibi Godzilla.

At this exhibition, visitors can immerse themselves in a vibrant environment, where expressive penguins come alive on a grand scale, creating an atmosphere similar to that of a grand theatre. With around 120 pieces on display, attendees can expect to be enchanted by the spirited scenes portrayed in his prints.

Additionally, the exhibition will feature a selection of popular penguin goods, with the new "Penguin Grand Theatre merchandise" set to launch on August 30. This adds an extra layer of excitement for fans looking to take a piece of art home with them.

Chiharu Sakazaki, who graduated from the Department of Design at Tokyo University of the Arts and became independent in 1998, continues to thrive in his artistic career. His dedication to character design has earned him a diverse following, enjoyed by people of all ages across Japan. Furthermore, Sakazaki was honored with the Ichikawa City Arts and Culture Encouragement Award in 2011, celebrating his contribution to the artistic community.
