Zuellig Pharma's Latest Acquisition: Strengthening Clinical Sourcing in China

In a significant move for the healthcare sector, Zuellig Pharma, a leading provider of healthcare solutions across Asia, has announced the acquisition of a specialized clinical supply facility in Hangzhou, China. This strategic acquisition is poised to bolster the company’s clinical sourcing capabilities, facilitating enhanced support for both domestic and international clinical trials.

The newly acquired facility, now licensed as a Drug Distribution License (DDL) holder, allows Zuellig Pharma to locally source comparator drugs and concomitant medications within China. This development is expected to streamline logistics, making the clinical trial process more efficient while also ensuring compliance with local regulations. Moreover, the local sourcing not only simplifies billing but also opens avenues for potential value-added tax (VAT) savings for sponsors conducting clinical trials.

Located strategically in the Yangtze River Delta, which is renowned for biopharmaceutical innovation, the Hangzhou facility seamlessly integrates with Zuellig Pharma's existing operations, including the Beijing depot and its expansive global network of over 45 clinical depots. Equipped with state-of-the-art cold-chain capabilities, the facility ensures product integrity through precision-controlled environments that cater to a range of temperature requirements from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, and down to -20 degrees Celsius.

John Graham, Group Chief Executive Officer of Zuellig Pharma, remarked on the importance of this acquisition, emphasizing that “Asia is taking on an increasingly pivotal role in global clinical research and drug development, with China serving as a critical market. Our continued investments in infrastructure reflect our dedication to supporting both regional and global healthcare needs.” With this acquisition, Zuellig Pharma aims to strengthen its support network for clinical trials, thus facilitating the accelerated development of innovative therapies essential for patients across Asia and beyond.

As logistical hurdles remain a barrier to effective clinical development, Zuellig's new facility is seen as a critical step in ensuring that vital supplies reach trial sites and patients safely and efficiently. David Christmas, Executive Vice President of Distribution and Clinical Trial Support, added, “Bolstering our clinical trial supply capabilities in China through local sourcing and distribution not only caters to domestic studies but also enhances the execution of multi-regional clinical trials. Our focus is on making these processes faster, ensuring uncompromised regulatory compliance and maintaining robust cold-chain integrity.”

Zuellig Pharma's Clinical Trial Support division serves as a trusted logistics and sourcing partner to 29 of the world’s top 50 pharmaceutical companies and 18 of the top 50 global Contract Research Organizations. This acquisition underscores the company’s commitment to delivering integrated, end-to-end clinical supply chain solutions that are reliable, sustainable, and digitally enabled, thereby supporting research partners in developing groundbreaking therapies and improving access to healthcare for patients.

For over a century, Zuellig Pharma has been dedicated to enhancing healthcare accessibility in the Asian community. With a presence in 18 markets and a workforce exceeding 12,000 employees, the company provides world-class distribution and commercial services tailored to the growing healthcare demands in the region.
