Background of the Production
The journey began in 2018 with
Elmer's Adventure, which saw great success as it traveled to various regions, culminating in a joyous final performance during the summer of 2022. In 2023, the much-anticipated sequel,
Elmer and the Dragon, was released, captivating audiences nationwide. Now, this winter, the production is excited to present its final chapter in this enchanting tale.
Synopsis
Elmer, after rescuing a dragon on Animal Island, embarks on a new adventure alongside his feline friend Mimi, riding on the dragon's back. Their next destination is Canary Island, where pandemonium ensues due to a curious illness called “curiosity fever.” The island is buzzing with questions about knowledge and understanding. As Elmer and the dragon navigate this wild journey, themes of connection and discovery unfold, inviting audiences to consider the depths of understanding.
Unique Themes and Direction
Under the skillful direction of Yoshihiko Shibasaki, the play explores the intricacies of truly knowing another being. It's a resonant theme that raises questions about the nuances of relationships; for instance, how can we claim to know someone when we may not even understand their simple preferences? The narrative challenges us to deepen our connections with others, just as the author R.S. Garnett reflects on their own upbringing, emphasizing understanding and respect.
How much effort is needed to truly understand the dragon? This question resonates deeply throughout the performance, encouraging audiences to reflect on their own perspectives and assumptions. The narrative beckons us not only to express our feelings but to cultivate empathy and an imaginative understanding of others.
