The VERSA-TALENT DEVELOPMENT CONSORTIUM (VDCJ) has recently conducted a comprehensive survey to assess corporate training and employee education in Japan. Managed by Glider Associates, VDCJ aims to create versatile talent capable of navigating the evolving business landscape. This initiative springs from the realization that as job market dynamics and technology grow rapidly, a new breed of multi-skilled professionals is essential for future business success. The survey specifically targeted personnel responsible for training and education within companies, uncovering crucial data about prevalent practices and ongoing challenges in the industry.
About VDCJ
VDCJ serves as a consortium for collaboration among companies invested in human resource development. It strives to facilitate information exchange and cooperation across various industries to address the challenges faced in employee training and education. The consortium's primary mission is to cultivate ‘VERSA-TALENT,’ professionals who can excel across multiple functions and possess a broad skill set suited for the modern business environment. To achieve this, VDCJ encourages its members to share insights on new technologies and requisite skills that often go beyond the in-house training programs.
One of the consortium's ambitious future goals is to involve educational institutions and government bodies, thereby enhancing Japan's overall workforce quality through concerted efforts in talent development.
Overview of the Survey Results
The recently released survey aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of the current state of corporate training and education. The following highlights summarize critical findings from the research:
What Training Programs are Most Commonly Implemented by Companies?
The survey indicated a tendency for companies to focus on various training programs for new employees, including both entry-level and mid-career recruits. Furthermore, organizations frequently conducted leadership training and sessions aimed at management-level personnel. Notably, publicly listed companies tend to implement programs aimed at cultivating potential executives, next-generation leaders, and initiatives focused on diversity, inclusion, and harassment prevention.
The full report will offer a more detailed breakdown of the training contents for different employee levels, including new graduates, mid-career professionals, and management personnel.
Challenges Facing Corporate Education Programs
Over 50% of companies reported facing obstacles in their training programs across all categories examined. The challenges were particularly pronounced in regards to training aimed at new business development, innovation promotion, and digital skills acquisition (DX).
Participant Satisfaction with Corporate Training
Interestingly, companies that incorporated collaborative and co-creative training reportedly enjoyed higher satisfaction levels among participants. However, there remains a notable dissatisfaction trend among mid-career professionals and management training, exhibiting a clear need for improvement.
