Introduction
In an inspiring initiative, the nonprofit organization ADDS has partnered with the Criacao Shinjuku football club to create a truly inclusive atmosphere at the MUFG Stadium. This collaboration aims to ensure that everyone, regardless of their sensory sensitivities or disabilities, can enjoy the thrilling experience of live football.
The Initiative
On March 20, 2026, ADDS launched two significant programs during the opening match of the JFL CUP. The programs included the establishment of sensory rooms and the implementation of a unique experience program named Diversity Experience (Dai-ex) that allows participants to understand the challenges faced by those on the autism spectrum.
Sensory Rooms
The sensory rooms were designed especially for individuals with sensory sensitivities, providing them with a quiet space to escape the overwhelming noise and excitement of the stadium. These rooms were equipped to accommodate families and individuals, offering peace of mind for those who often find such crowded environments stressful.
Program Highlights
- - Facilities: Two dedicated sensory rooms and a shared relaxation area were set up.
- - Usage: The rooms welcomed 13 users, including three families and five adults with autism, allowing them a calm area to enjoy the game.
- - Satisfaction Feedback: Remarkably, 100% of users expressed satisfaction with the experience and felt that it was easy to participate in such an event.
- - Feedback Collection: Interviews were conducted with participants to gather insights and adjust the environment according to their needs.
- - Supportive Environment: Zoning was utilized to differentiate between a 'Relax Area' and an 'Active Area' to cater to varying needs.
- - Visual Aids: Visual supporting tools, including player photo boards and rules explanation boards, enhanced understanding for younger attendees and provided a tailored viewing experience.
Guest Interaction
The event included visits from distinguished individuals such as former Japan national team players, allowing attendees to engage and build a bridge between fans and players. Feedback from participants indicated a deep appreciation for the thoughtful arrangements made by the staff, which contributed to a memorable day.
Diversity Experience
The second program, Diversity Experience, engaged student and professional volunteers who were invited to partake in an authentic stadium experience while being restricted by specialized equipment mimicking some limitations faced by individuals with autism.
Tour Experience
- - Interactive Program: Participants wore special glasses and used hearing devices to navigate the stadium under conditions that resembled the discomfort experienced by those with sensory sensitivities.
- - Awareness and Empathy: The aim was for volunteers to truly empathize with the challenges these individuals face daily when participating in public events.
- - Success Measurement: Impressively, 100% of participants reported a deeper understanding of sensory particularities, while 87.5% indicated a change in their perspective on providing support to those in need.
Future Prospects
This initiative sets a precedent for future accessibility in public venues. By combining expert environmental adjustments with public awareness and understanding, ADDS aims to enhance the overall accessibility of stadiums. This collaboration with Criacao Shinjuku is an essential step towards creating a model stadium that can be shared globally, offering an inclusive space for all fans to enjoy sports without barriers.
